Luongo and Raymond Big Stars in Game against Predators
Canuck’s Hockey Blog reviews Vancouver’s win last night against Nashville (3-2). “For the first time in four months,” hoopsjunkey writes in the post , “the Vancouver Canucks finally had their top-four defensemen in the lineup.” None-the-less, they still allowed the Predators 51 shots on Roberto Luongo. Thankfully, Luongo “stopped 49 of those 51 shots plus another 3 in the shootout.” We’re getting used to the fact that Luongo wins games that the Canucks have “no business winning. In the team's current three-game winning streak, he hasn't allowed more than two goals per game.”
Vancouver’s Mason Raymond had a solid game with a beautiful goal, an assist and the shootout winner. The big story, however, was Kevin Bieksa's return. He “missed 47 games and played the night before with the Manitoba Moose.” He only played for 15 minutes, “but you can tell he needs to get used to playing the guys again… But overall, Bieksa was okay.” He adds a little “different dimension” to the defense. Last night’s win moves the Canucks up to seventh place in the Western Conference.
Poverty Olympics Reneges on Promises to Poor
A recent post on the Downtown Eastside Enquirer reveals that the Povertarians who organized the Poverty Olympics, gave promises to the poor that they didn’t deliver. “Poor people are claiming that they were led to believe that they would be paid an honorarium of $20 if they ‘volunteered’ at the Poverty Olympics.” According to the post, the Poverty Olympic organizers at the Carnegie Center Community Association aren’t paying up.
One of the complainers said that “the excuse provided for not paying people… is that too many ‘volunteers’ showed up and the money is not available.” Twenty dollars may not sound like much, but it means a lot to people living “at starvation welfare rates.” As CAPP's Jean Swanson put it, “People forced to do all kinds of demeaning things to get the money to survive.” As the Eastside Enquirer states in the post , we should take note that “paying people cash honorariums or volunteer tickets/food vouchers is a regular method used by povertarians to entice the poor to participate in political events.”
Stellar Cast and Script Make Leo a Must See
Andrea at Beyond Robson recently posted a review of Tarrason Theatre’s Léo now playing through March 1 at the Firehall Arts Centre. “Written by Rosa Laborde, and directed by Richard Rose, Léo tells the story of three young friends coming of age in seventies socialist Chilé.” The story revolves around Léo (played by Salvatore Antonio), “a poet who fluctuates between impassioned declarations, beautiful imagery, and an almost nihilistic selfishness.” His best friends Rodrigo (Sergio Di Zio) and Isolde (Lesley Faulkner) “form the other sides of this complicated triangle.”
Andrea gives kudos to the fantastic cast in her post , and praises the script for its “vivid imagery.” The subject matter is heavy, but peppered with “plenty of dark humour.” The only criticisms she offered were that the staging felt a “little awkward, with the actors occasionally spending a bit too much time with their backs to the audience.” Performances run nightly with matinees on the weekends.

I thought last nights game was a turning point for Luongo who has been average since the all-star break while last Saturday night against the Oilers was a turning point for the team. Clearly, the young guns are gaining some confidence and it probably didn't hurt that the dads were there watching. The real test is going to be tomorrow night against the Red Wings.
