NowPublic.com Nominated for Emmy Award

Photos

Kudos to all the staff at NowPublic for Emmy Nomination.  the Emmy Nomination is for Advanced Media: Interactivity it appears that the nomination is for the well developed platform we all have available to us to write the news.

NowPublic,a citizen journalist site, is among the nominees for Advanced Media: Interactivity. It marks the first time in Emmy history for a user-generated news site to earn such a nomination.
While there's no specific date or story to mark the official birth "citizen journalism", NowPublic deserves credit for providing passionate and resourceful independent  reporters the tools the the site to publish their original material to a mass audience.

Based in Vancouver, NowPublic publishes stories from thousands of contributors, with reporters in more than 5,500 cities and 160 countries.   Established media eventually followed their lead and cable news networks integrated citizen reports into their daily broadcasts, such as  I-report on CNN.

Leonard Brody, co-founder and CEO of NowPublic, believes the nomination legitimizes citizen journalism as an integral modern source for  news.

A big Bravo and very well deserved!!

This is a just reward for the modus-operandi here, which puts the emphasis on breaking news, good-quality opinion, good user/site contact and a fair and equitable post and comment moderation policy.

All concerned deserve a glass of bubbly!!

Great news.  Nice to be recognized is it not?

It's more than just the site - not to disparage NP or its staff. This site gives users an opportunity through its pages and features (phone reporting, video uploading, etc) for users to bring each other the news as it happens.

And devoted users should not be overlooked - Al, you aren't the only one, but you and others like you who develop quality stories helped make this happen.

Vision, technology and devotion equaled the nomination. And I hope it soon equals the award. Good work all!

Thank You for your kind remarks.

Your coverage of the RNC was astounding and deserves mention here.

Maybe NP will give us all a tiny Emmy for our desks LOL.  My Brother has two and I would like to catch up one day.  Any one who knows David A. Milliron, knows he is one of the worlds experts in computer assisted reporting.  I am proud of his leading the way for Sites as He was Gannett News Service and the Atlanta Journal Constitution go to man for years on how to get the news online.  He is Now an Exec at Caspio Inc and Teaches at Emory University.  I would be happy to achieve  10 percent of what he has accomplished.

Since the Emmy Nomination is for Advanced Media: Interactivity it appears that the nomination is for well developed platform we have available to us to write the news.

I don't wish to put a damper on this because its good news a site like NP receives a nomination for an Emmy Award but its not for content or the quality of content, its for the NP Scan Tool, which I think the majority of members don't even use, most seem to have a problem just using the highlight tool.

The source post states "with reporters in more than 5,500 cities and 160 countries." We both know this isn't strictly true. There are no reporters on NP, that's a quote from Leonard Brody and since most are posting news from the broadsheets there are few original writers. 5,500 cities would indicate that there are at least 5,500 members, but members can indicate any country or city they care to.

On average, there are probably less than 100 people posting at any one time, with the majority being America based, probably followed by India and then the UK.

But well done NP for the nomination.......

"There are no reporters on NP"

This is completely inaccurate as I have reported on scene during the entire election.  Sanjay Reported from Mumbai here and on Major networks with breaking news. Many breakng news vents have been reported on NowPublic before any mainstream media.  Everyone who reports an observation on a newsworthy item are Reporters.

"There are no reporters on NP" is a direct quote from Leonard Brody, one of the founders of NP...take it up with him!

2
politisite

Then you should have cited him as the source LOL.  Mr. Brody is the founder and I highly respect him.  NowPublic has taken on a life beyond what the founder could have hoped for or imagined.  Some of us are not citizen type journalists.  Many of us are expects in particular fields of study.  We are the source on subjects and we provide coverage without the filter of a reporter.

You are correct, there are some original reports on NP but they account for a small percentage of the total posts which are mostly copy and paste from broadsheet media. What makes NP interesting is the comments section.

However, NowPublic has been criticized for the type of news it is providing. Rather than offering in-depth coverage, most posts either feature reprinted articles from mainstream media sites or member editorials. But content is almost beside the point. NowPublic isn’t poised to replace traditional news outlets; rather, it represents an evolution in news gathering that is becoming one more weapon in the mainstream media’s arsenal.
Leonard Brody, founder of NowPublic, rejects the term "citizen journalism," which has often been applied to his business. "What [our contributors] do is not journalism. We don't call it that and never have." In spite of that, he did construct NowPublic to serve as a new kind of media site. His initial goal, he said, was, "Let's go build Reuters 2.0."

First, they're an army of ants, but with cameraphones, uStream and YouTube links, and Twitter accounts. At the moment, the NowPublic contributors add, literally, alternate perspectives to typical news reports.

Just to razz one further, many MSM sourses now cite Nowpublic as a reliable news source.  e.g.

The fact that only last month, the same group received a 5.5 percent hike should raise a red flag, as should a recent report showing executives from various financial companies accepted $18.4 billion in corporate bonuses in the 2008 fourth quarter, all while receiving billions in taxpayer bailout funds, as cited on www.nowpublic.com.
It turns out that, according to nowpublic.com, "Teen Wolf" was not only nominated in, but has, in fact, won in several categories this year.

Then during the Mumabai Bombings, FoxNews described Sanjay as a NowPublic Reporter.  They used Sanjay until they could get their people in place.  Fox is the number 1 cable news station in America.

I could go on and on. But if the commenter is the Ghost I think they are, no amount of informatin will change the mind.

I'm watching and waiting for an emmy-like statuette to make it's subtle appearance in the banner art ;^)

I am sure that would not happen unless they actually won an emmy.  Then I say,   "emmy-like statuette"s everywhere!

I'm just happy for us to enter the pantheon of Emmy nominees such as Deadwood, even if it's for a tech award. In fact, should we win, rather than place a picture of an Emmy on my desk, I'll use a pic of Al Swearengen.

Laughing-Samurai

Agreed I think its great even if its for a tech award and the Scan Tool is awesome....

Al your are welcome.  NowPublic has made some great strides in Technology.  I was hoping it  was on the news coverage that Sanjay did from India or other breaking news NowPublic First covered.  At the same time, NP deserves the Kudos as the platform and teckies like Jordan have done some great work.

Jordan, if the Emmy is directly because of some of what you did.  Duplicates are available for 400 dollars.
