An unprecedented hike in prices of electricity by 40 per cent went into effect in Pakistan on Wednesday jolting a country of 160 million people already reeling under the highest inflation in the country’s history.

The authority responsible for fixing the tariff had recommended 61 per cent but the prime minister reportedly declined to approve the recommendation. However, it seems it would come to nearly 100 per cent as compared to the current bills because the government is understood to have planned a trick.
