President Barack Obama? What Can, Will He Do?

Obama for Four Years. What will he do?

Barack Obama will be president of the US in two months.  What will he do?  What can he do? He won with 52% of the vote, not exactly a landslide. Democrats won additional seats in congress but republicans have enough senate seats to block most legislation.  So what will happen next year?

    Economy.  Republicans are already balking at saving the US auto industry. They are unlikely to approve another trillion dollars or more to be pumped into economic recovery. President Obama will have to do something on this almost as soon as he takes office. But his choices are limited. He must cut back on some of his promises on the economy or raise taxes, including on the middle class. Whatever he does large groups will blame him.

     Iraq. In the primaries Obama said he would bring all troops home in 2009.  Since then he has been mostly silent on Iraq. Iraq has just approved a withdrawal deadline of December 2011. The far left democrats will not lile that but I think Obama will go along with that date.

     Afghanistan. Obama has said he will immediately send 10,000 more troops and that the US must win the war there, opposite of his stand on Iraq. Afghanistan is bigger than Iraq and its terrain is ideal for guerrila warfare. 10,000 troops will make little difference, especially as many other countries are withdrawing their troops. Obama may face the choice of building the Afghan US forces up to the levels now in Iraq or else face still being there during the next election.  Tough choice.
