The White House announced today that President Bush will lift an executive order banning offshore oil drilling, a move aimed at stepping up pressure on Congress to end the prohibition it imposed in 1981.
By Albert N. Millliron, Editor, Politisite.com
With The Presidential lifting of the Ban, Congress now has a limited amount of days to do the same by lifting the congressional ban. There is already congressional opposition
Once again, the oilman in the White House is echoing the demands of Big Oil,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. “The Bush plan is a hoax. It will neither reduce gas prices nor increase energy independence. It just gives millions more acres to the same companies that are sitting on nearly 68 million acres of public lands and coastal areas.”
“This proposal is something you’d expect from an oil company CEO, not the president of the United States,” said Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate Environment Committee. “The president is taking special-interest government to a new level and threatening our thriving coastal economy.” ( source: New York Times)
Politisite is aware that our environmentalist friends are worried about drilling. I thought it would be beneficial to add a few photos of prudhoe bay , Alaska See Here. The environmental groups want you to believe that oil drilling and wildlife do not co-exist. The second Photo of the Alaska Pipeline where the Bear uses the pipeline as a travel path south. The pipeline emits heat and the temperature is a few degrees warmer. The bear pictured here, figured the pipeline is a foot warmer as he travels. The last photo is of the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge (ANWAR) in North East Alaska. Please see all the wildlife that will be effected by drilling there.
Note: Prudhoe Bay did not have the wildlife numbers they now have. Here is a photo of what the view from the beach will look like when an Oil Rig is constructed off shore under the new provisions.
The Whiite House announced today that President Bush will lift an executive order banning offshore oil drilling, a move aimed at stepping up pressure on Congress to end the prohibition it imposed in 1981.
Bush “has decided to lift the executive ban on oil exploration in America’s Outer Continental Shelf,” White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told a news briefing. She said Bush would explain the move in a Rose Garden statement at 1:30 p.m..
Perino acknowledged that the president’s action by itself will not allow more oil drilling. Instead, she said, Bush hopes to prompt Congress to act on his call last month to lift its moratorium.
In a speech at the White House June 18, Bush urged lawmakers to lift a 27-year-old ban on drilling for oil and gas on the outer continental shelf, arguing that the country needs more domestic energy production to help reduce dependence on foreign oil and ease upward pressure on gasoline prices.
Press Briefing by Dana Perino
And finally, in just about 45 minutes, President Bush will have remarks in the Rose Garden in which he will announce that he is going to lift the executive prohibition on the Outer Continental Shelf for — that would allow for increased domestic oil exploration and production if Congress also lifts its ban. And about a month ago, President Bush asked Congress to move forward and to work with him in order to do this. We asked Congress to take that step. They have not even held a hearing on the issue, even though there’s been a lot of talk about it in the country. There’s a big debate in the country, and I think Americans are increasingly realizing that we need to start to look for more of our own resources.
We have improved technology tremendously to be able to do so in environmentally friendly ways. So we will take this action today and we will continue to call on Congress to act, and now the ball is squarely in their court.
We are able to actually explore for the oil or the gas, it just takes a little bit of time. And what the , I believe so, in terms of just practice of how we’ve been working here, but I’ll have to check in terms of if there’s anything written or that needed to be written. There’s obviously many people who are working on the library, but none — I don’t know of anybody at the White House who has any dealings with it — any particular dealings with the library, the development of the library, the foundation. I don’t know of anybody here at the White House.
You’ll remember that I took the White House to task for its “You go first!” games on lifting the offshore drilling ban. See here. There’s an executive order ban that his dad signed and there’s the congressional ban. Back in June, I highlighted the Institute for Energy Research’s open letter to President Bush pressing him to tear up the executive order.Took him long enough, but he’s finally listening:
The White House says President Bush is planning to lift an executive ban on offshore oil drilling.
In a Rose Garden statement on Monday, the president plans to lift the ban. But by itself, the move will not lead to more drilling off America’s coastline.
Congress must still lift its own legislative ban before offshore drilling can happen.
Ball’s in your court, San Fran Nan…will you cry “hoax” again or get Congress off its collective arse and actually do something about energy independence now?
In related news, a federal judge sided with the enviro-nitwits and struck down a plan to drill in a Michigan forest. The Sierra Club rejoices:
pponents of a plan to drill for natural gas beneath a wilderness area known as the Mason Tract are celebrating a federal judge’s decision to block mineral exploration there.
A judge determined federal officials failed to perform adequate environmental assessments prior to granting approval to drill.
“Absent of going back and doing the full environmental impact statement or appealing, it’s dead,” said Marvin Roberson of the Michigan Sierra Club, a plaintiff in a lawsuit against the federal government to halt the drilling.
Savoy Exploration of Traverse City for years wanted to slant drill a new well beneath the sprawling, scenic Mason Tract from a nearby spot on federal forestland. A pipeline and production facility would be installed if gas is found.
A lawsuit was filed in 2005 by Anglers of the Au Sable, the Mackinac Chapter of the Sierra Club and Tim Mason, grandson of the man who donated the Crawford County land to the state.
The suit questioned whether the U.S. government performed an adequate environmental assessment of the proposed drilling and if all mineral lease laws were followed.
Did oil rigs spill any oil or had any environmental impact following Katrina? NowPublic Writer Rene, located in New Orleans Lousisana asked that the I review the data on Katrina oil Spills. The statement, "During Katrina no oil Rigs spills occurred", appears to be incorrect. and Politisite has removed that staement from this story. I have included some aditional information to Balance the story further. McCain may be incorrect in claims Katrina And Rita Did Not Cause Significant Oil Spillage based upoin the following data from reconized sources.
clear satellite evidence of major spills was borne out by final reports. In May 2006, the U.S. Minerals Management Service (MMS) published their offshore damage assessment: “113 platforms totally destroyed, and 457 pipelines damaged, 101 of those major lines with 10″ or larger diameter.”
Pipeline damage from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita caused spillage, according to the official report prepared for the MMS by a Norwegian firm:Hurricanes Katrina and Rita Caused 124 Offshore Spills For A Total Of 743,700 Gallons. 554,400 gallons were crude oil and condensate from platforms, rigs and pipelines, and 189,000 gallons were refined products from platforms and rigs. [MMS, 1/22/07] , Six Offshore Spills Of 42,000 Gallons Or Greater. The largest of these was 152,250 gallons, well over the 100,000 gallon threshhold considered a “major spill.” [MMS, 5/1/06]
The 9 million gallons reported spilled were comparable with the Exxon Valdez’s 10.8 million gallons, but unlike the Exxon Valdez, were distributed throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and other Gulf Coast states, many in residential areas. The most massive spills included:
The Politisite Bottom Line: (opinion) If The price of a Barrel of Oil went down by $6.00 just by the President's Announcement of the Executive Lift. What would happen if the Congress follows suit? As it stands now The congressional leaders are saying no. It is not politically expedient for them to do so while President Bush is still in office. This is a clear indication that Congressional leaders are more interested in taking credit for lower oil prices then concern about poor Americans who are struggling due to high oil prices.

This is wonderful news for everyone who froze this winter with heating oil at $1000 a fillup and for poor people watching the cost of necessities skyrocketing.
at 12:22 on July 14th, 2008
The Congress has a short time to lift their ban as well. At least President Bush made the first move to takle high oil proces by using resouces here at home.

I don't understand the idiots that say "we wont see a change for 5-10 years." Ok in 5-10 years we can say "thank god we started drilling 5-10 years ago"
at 13:24 on July 14th, 2008
Also, to the extent that speculation has contributed to the rapid price increase, as soon as the speculators sense that America is going to get serious about developing our own petroleum resources, they will start dumping their contracts which will bring the price down fast. I have an oil price widget on my own blog that shows oil price movements and the projected price in one year. If you want to see something scary, see what the price is projected to be in one year on this widget at http://forthegrandchildren.blogspot.com .

Thanks for our comments, I have heard that excuse as well. The left talking points are no oil from these for 7-10 years. The right says as close as 1-2 years. The bottom line is if we always wait until we are in a fix before we do anything, everything is reacionary and shifts to far the other direction. Now is the time to get off our corperate buts and get things done. The oil will provide a cushion not a time to site around and do nothing. There is a gap that has occured from oil to renewable resources. Filling in the gap is a good idea, but at the same time there should be insentives to produce better gas efficency. Work toward hybrid tech that can get transportation that will work on electric, use the motion to generate power, solar etc.
In South Carolina there is a company that manufacters solar water heaters, solar ice boxes, solar air conditioning. All of these products convert the heat of the sun into power. They will be looking at solar film on windows next. If small companies like Aqua Products Company focus part of their knowlegde toward renewables, America will become the great inovation nation we once were.

After President Carter declared an energy crisis and exhorted Americans to wear sweaters and conserve, I decided to build an energy-efficient house. I built one that was heated with wood and passive solar. The house also had a direct-type solar hot water heating system. No good deed ever goes unpunished. Mud wasps built a nest in the solar relay, and the water froze - destroying the panels, and I ruptured a disk in my back splitting wood. The point is that there are hidden costs to most sorts of alternative energy, and I now heat with natural gas.
at 18:22 on July 14th, 2008
You do know that Mud Wasps are Democrats or at least Liberals. The live where they don't pay and expect you to deal with the impact of what is left. The environmentalist spiked your wood and made it difficult to split, thus your injuries. Blame it on the left. LOL
Sorry about your back BTW, I have a back problems from military svc. No fun at all. Thankfully energy effcient products are better then the 70s. care to try again? Some of my family in PA live on property where they have gas for life as they live on natural gas land.

politisite, I like this story. It's good stuff.
But is offshore drilling a permanent solution to our energy problem? And what long-term environmental effects will it bring?
at 18:17 on July 14th, 2008
No one is touting off shore drilling as the answer to all of our problems. It is one component of a comprehensive solution that includes all of Americas research and development to solve the total problem.
In the article I reorted that during Katrina there was not one oil spill or rig that caused environmental damage. A message that many do not want to hear. Tell me, in the last 28 years and oil rig in the Gulf of mexico that caused environmental damage.
The Exxon Valdez was not from an oil rig, but a man who descided it was OK to drink and let his 2nd in charge run a barge a ground. Since then barges that carry oil are double hulled to protect from this ever occuring again.
Because I write an article about President Bush lifting the Ban does not mean that all of our problems are solved. You will find that Congress will not act to lift the Congressional Ban due to it not being politically expedient for them. It will show America very clearly that the will not act because it is election time and acting will not give credit to Democrats. It is the sad fact of politics.
American Companies have got to act as well to develop alturnatives. McCain has offered a 400 million dollar incentive for companies who develop battery technology that can replace the limited capacity we have now. What have the democratic congress proposed? The quick answer, nothng, why?
Senator Obama has been called the new name NoBama because his answer to any proposal has been no. He wants to wait until he is the president before he offers anything. It is sad, but that is politics. Do either of these parties really care about the poor?
If your an Obama or a McCain gas prices mean very little. But if you have to drive a car on a minimum wage job. Gas is a real big deal. McCains gas tax holiday of 40 cents a gallon would help the poorest of Americans. Obama said NO.
So yoru simple question requires are comprehensive answer. Oil drilling will bring down speculation if Congress will lift the ban. Gas will drop over a dollar a gallon. if Congress does not act, 5.00 a gallon before the election and all the commericals will say, Bush doesn't care about the poor, he did nothing to help reduce gas prices....

Don't get me wrong, Al, but check the links out in this story about Post-Katrina Oil spills and leaks.
There were actually extensive leaks, spills and many oil rigs and platforms were destroyed. Though much came from storage along the coast, there was quite a bit out in the Gulf. I can't upload the satellite picture of the oil in the Gulf cause it's just too big.
One result of the spills and leaks from storage tanks is that they will be rebuilt better and safer, with eyes on another hurricane.
at 13:58 on July 16th, 2008
I will look into it. Do you have the URL of the satellite photo?
at 20:10 on July 16th, 2008
It's in the story I posted a link to above, a local Louisiana blog. satellite photo that crashed my Safari. It is huge 6000 x 4500 pixels. There's other photos, but lost the link to the story. Try googling 'Katrina oil spills'. There is some confusion about how much actually spilled in the Gulf. But with so many destroyed oil rigs and platforms and pipelines, there was bound to be more. Here's a blogpost with links to technical reports on the Gulf oil spills.

Oil prices have dropped again today, to $133.64 by midday Wednesday.
at 06:58 on July 17th, 2008
Personally I don't think McCain lied about what he thought the impact of Katrina and Rita had on oil spills, but that he was given faulty information.
Since no single spill was over 2,000 barrels, this was considered 'insignificant,' but the combination of over 100 oil rigs and platforms destroyed, plus the many pipelines with what they contained, really added up.
An example of the info McCain probably got is this report from 2007 on the spills and leaks from the Minerals Management Service of the Dept of the Interior.
McCain just needs better, more knowledgeable advisers.
at 02:39 on July 19th, 2008
Yes, you can see that trail of where they got their info. George Will says someting, McCain Repeats it, George Retracts it, and they say McCain lied. It happens all the time. The Campaigns don't have the best fact checkers and when they do they can get caught by several sources repeating something. Mitt Romney had this happen as he was told all of his life his Father Marched with MLK. It was cited in Books as well. But Romneys Dad never marched with him.
