GroundViews released the letter from Sonali, wife of Lasantha Wickremetunge to take action in finding the killers of her husband. Sri Lankan government has not yet made any progress in finding the killer. Is president of Sri Lanka hiding the killers ?

We reproduce in full a letter from Sonali Samarasinghe Wickremetunge to the IGP asking him to record ‘very important details’ known to the Sri Lankan President and at least one other senior government minister, based on the minister’s own admission, pertaining to the identity of her husband Lasantha Wickremetunge’s killers.

The Editor in Chief of the Sunday Leader and one of Sri Lanka’s best known journalists, Lasantha Wickremetunge was murdered on 8th January 2009 en route to work, in broad daylight and on a busy road. The murderers, whoever they are, have yet to be captured.

Groundviews was told that no newspaper in Sri Lanka was willing to carry this letter in full. Therein too lies a story of the pervasive nature of anxiety and fear in Sri Lanka, and the conditions facing independent journalists and media. We publish this letter in the hope that sustained domestic and international pressure to reveal the identity of Lasantha’s killers, especially as they seem to be known to the highest authority in the country, will help find and bring them to justice.

Lasantha Wickremetunge was an admired journalist around the world.

However, he was just a nail in their throat for the Sri Lankan Government and Sinhalese extremists in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan Government had him killed because he was shedding light on government's corruptions, Tamils rights and human rights violations in Sri Lanka.

However, for the Sinhalese extremists were willing to forget him so fast because he talked for Tamils's rights in Sri Lanka.  The Sinhalese chuvanism is willing to trade government corruption to have Tamils' rights demolised in Sri Lanka.

God forbid, if Tamils can ever live freely in Sri Lanka.

You're right Senthil, there has not been any progress to find the killers who murdered Lasantha. I don't think there ever will be either. The parties who were responsible for his death are doing a very good job hiding the murderers.

Tamiya is right, the reason Lasantha was murdered was because he was exposing the corruption and human rights violations committed by the government.

There are many Tamils in Sri lanka who now live in fear Tamiya. But don't forget, there are also some Sinhalese, the ones who oppose the views and ideology of this regime and its supporters that are also unable to live freely in Sri Lanka.
