President Obama stands with Constitution, Republicans object
Last Friday before heading off on a mini vacation in the Florida panhandle, the President decided to weigh in on the proposed Mosque in New York, near ground Zero.
At the annual dinner in the State Dinning Room where guests gathered to celebrate the Islamic Holy month of Ramadan, President Obama made a short speech weighing in on the controversy about the proposed Mosque.
"As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country,"
"That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances," he said. "This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable."
The words spoken by our President are at the very core of our Constitution and the rights of all Americans to worship or not worship the religion of their choosing.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an independent who has been a strong supporter of the mosque, welcomed Obama's words as a "clarion defense of the freedom of religion."
But Rep. Peter King (R-NY) said, "President Obama is wrong. It is insensitive and uncaring for the Muslim community to build a mosque in the shadow of ground zero."
Republican xenophobes Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, and Rudy Giuliani, along with Fox News and all of their echo chambers have been bashing the proposed Mosque and now they are bashing the President for simply standing up for the Constitution which allows every American these freedoms of religion.
The proposed Mosque is not being built next to ground zero, the proposed site is two blocks away but it is close. Next to ground Zero, there is the Trinity Church and not far from there is the Jewish Tolerance Museum.
Tolerance the acceptance of different views, something that the right wing in this country positively lacks.
It is simple, either you believe in Freedom of Religion as our Constitution says, or you do not. There is no in-between.
