President Obama State of the Union Address 2010 Full Text
President Obama gave his State of the Union address 2010 speech tonight, January 27th and he was clear about what the issues were and received a positive response for most of his points.
President Obama addressed the economy, education, taxes, the bank bailout, jobs and how he won't accept the United States being in second place for anything, among other points.
When speaking of the economy he says "the worst of the storm has passed, but the devastation remains".
He got a laugh when he said the bank bailout "was about as popular as a root canal". He got more laughs when he listed the tax cuts and said "I thought I would get a laugh on that".
When he turned to jobs he said that they must be the "number one focus in 2010" and that seemed to be something everyone could agree on.
Obama also said he couldn't accept "second place for the United States of America" and said that it was not fair that America couldn't have the fastest trains or the best industries. He wants safe, clean power plants in the U.S and he wants America to be a leader in clean energy.
The biggest topic seemed to be health care and he acknowledged his wife Michelle for starting a campaign to end childhood obesity. He then quipped "she gets embarrassed".
The New York Times has the full text of the speech, but we have exceprted a few parts here as it's too big to reprint in full here.
One year ago, I took office amid two wars, an economy rocked by severe recession, a financial system on the verge of collapse, and a government deeply in debt. Experts from across the political spectrum warned that if we did not act, we might face a second depression. So we acted – immediately and aggressively. And one year later, the worst of the storm has passed.
We will continue to go through the budget line by line to eliminate programs that we can't afford and don't work. We've already identified $20 billion in savings for next year. To help working families, we will extend our middle-class tax cuts. But at a time of record deficits, we will not continue tax cuts for oil companies, investment fund managers, and those making over $250,000 a year. We just can't afford it.
Abroad, America's greatest source of strength has always been our ideals. The same is true at home. We find unity in our incredible diversity, drawing on the promise enshrined in our Constitution: the notion that we are all created equal, that no matter who you are or what you look like, if you abide by the law you should be protected by it; that if you adhere to our common values you should be treated no different than anyone else.

Obama was as frank as ever in his address. He needs support from all and sundry. Americans must be ready to embrace change and sustain the ideals that really make America. Enough of political mudslinging. Fidelis, Nigeria.

That was a mighty sweet address by Barack Obama. The speech indicates some moves from being inspirational to "let get going here". To us who really appreciate the sterling work Barack Obama does - first and primarily for the US and the whole world - the speech comes as a powerful news. Definitely I would have some exciting things to talk about in my opinion and analysis blog> www.FreedomCharter.org. The blog is dedicated to the work of Barack Obama!

Obama's State of The Union speech = fluffy, pretty, animated, rearranged words. Great speech writers do NOT equal substance. The partisans seem to forget we are still one nation. Pelosi, the majority of the Dems, and Obama need to stop trying to shove the health care bill down our throats and indeed come up with real solutions for our economic woes. I do want to give every President a chance. Lat night Obama said pretty much the same things he said a year ago. The words were just rearranged and fluffed up a bit. We are still waiting for him to come through. We hope he will. But we are still waiting or that CHANGE.

I thought it was a good speech, at least interesting enough to watch from beginning to end. I also watched the repub reaction speech which I thought was lame or weak in content.
at 06:44 on January 28th, 2010

Ok Marge You said rude comments, you are the one that is being very onesided. So its ok fo ryou to say what you want about the speech but someone else cant have their own say????? Hmmm that is very one sided. please believe me you will learn the hard way.

Wonderful speech. True to the spirit of America or at least what it was before politics become so poisonous. I teach Speech and students and I will be going over it with a fine tooth comb come Monday. It's structure was wonderful and am curious to know how much was Pres. Obama and how much is speech writers?

I am an American citizen, and I am tired of Obama's speeches. These long periods of meaningless rhetoric are not only full of bull, they are, in the whole, detrimental to the welfare of our country. If his aim is to fix the job situation, then he must impress the voters of America with results. So far, I see only gloom ahead. Obama said that the worst was past, and he is DEAD WRONG!!!!

'He then quipped "she (Michelle) gets embarrassed".' ...I would be embarrassed too (if he was my spouse). He's lying. Again. Like he did last year.

U are sooooooo right. Im sick of the lies, ready for the next election. Get him outta office!

Wait a minute. All politians have told some kind of lie. That is what politics is. Have you ever heard a politician in an interview just simply replying yes or no unless he or she is undergurding another politician's viewpoint? It's always a whole bunch of other stuff that doesn't have much to do with the question and then some kind of fluffed up answer. President Obama is trying really hard. You can't inherit a huge national debt and be expected to turn it all around over night. The whole health care issue shouldn't even be an issue. I'm 15 and don't really care all that much about it but there are thousands upon thousands of Americans without healthcare coverage that will soon need it. Even though we still have a dangerously high unemployment rate (what is it 9.7% or something like that?), what they don't mention is the unemployment rate based on ethnic background. Being black with a mother who hasn't worked since the birth of my brother 11 years ago (with the exception of a recent part time job) I know that it's hard. I believe the unemployment rate for us is pushing 18%. But these are the times in which President Obama is trying desperately trying to aid the middle and lower class whether it works or not it will take a lot of time. Besides that, why do you want President Obama out of office so badly? Do you think Bush can do better or maybe McCain? I think President Obama did a wonderful job presenting his speech. I had to watch it for my AP US 1 class. He never seems to be reading from anything but his own mind which makes us hope and believe in a better future for America. It'll happen eventually but until then be very sure to educate yourself on the history of America and not to be so judgemental of one man's character especially when it may not be only his character that you're judging him on.

My faith in Obama has been restored and strengthened. He was too the point and direct. We gave the last administration 8 years to send our economy spiraling into the abyss, yet we have expected nothing short of miracles from Obama. It is time for our representatives in Washington to stop "tit for tatting" and get to the business of representing the people!!!! Kudos to President Obama for his unwavering belief in the greatness of our country and its people!

I am afraid that you don't understand the way the Gov't works. The "last administration" didn't mess up the economy, it was the congress (led by liberals) that did it. You see, the President is controlled by others, and congress is one of those forces of control. George W. Bush refused to be controlled by congress, and they made him pay for it. His presidency was the most secure time for our country since Reagan. You Don't know what you are talking about. It is IGNORANT people like you that have made this country go bad.
at 11:02 on January 28th, 2010
I am afraid you have forgotten that our country was not secure under Bush, i.e. 9/11/01? Why do IGNORANT people like you forget that the U.S. has not been attacked since December 7, 1941 UNTIL Bush took office. Secure my ass. People hate us now. They threw a freakin shoe at Bush. If by secure, you mean economically, you are also sadly mistaken, that was false growth, just like the 1920s. When the economy grows based on over spending on credit cards and bad loans, then it isn't real prosperity. Also, be honest with yourself, there are very, very few liberals in Congress, the majority of the Dems are moderate. Besides, Bush had a republican congress when for the majority of his term. As usual, another republican has misinterpreted the facts in order to prove their point.
at 10:17 on February 1st, 2010
Correct me if I'm wrong, Teach. didn't we get attacked on Feb. 26, 1993? Remember? The World Trade Center?
at 11:12 on January 28th, 2010
Are you serious? The reason this country is messed up is because Bush refused to listen to congress. It is IGNORANT people like YOU that have made this country go bad.
at 11:44 on January 28th, 2010
Perhaps you don't understand the way the economy works. Pres. Bush had a Republican majority until about a year before the end of his term. You are correct that Congress doesn't have to help the president, and his Republican dominated Congress sometimes blocked him, or tried to. I applauded his stand on Immigration, but his own party rebuffed him. He asked for controls on Wall Street and banks, but his own party didn't agree. I didn't like what happened to America during the Bush Administration, but the Republican dominated Congress (and Chaney and Rove) caused more harm than did Bush. I often felt sorry for Bush; he was a captive president who was manipulated by others.

Get to work. Enough talking.

I am not a citizen of America, but I want to give some comments. What I have realised is that a lot of people are acting like school kids. They expect Mr. Obama to produce paradise on earth within one year of reign, whilst a lot went wrong with your economy and your foreign relations were not something to write home about. Stop expecting wonders within unreasonable time. Stop jumping from this political platform to the other one, and try to make things worse for the person who is in charge. You must not forget that your country went to a war which was not justified, whether you like it or not, you wrongly did it. Acknowledge and change your attitude. China is superseding all other "big" countries in regard to economics and on other levels. Don't you see that? Most of us who are admire your country for the achievements you attained over the decades and centuries. But you are now getting stagnated, because you concentrate on pity issues and make America a hell of a country to govern, just in the name of democracy and freedom of speech. Please give President Barak Obama a chance to make the best out of the current dilema your country is, in regard to foreign relations and economy. And to some others; you are really trying your best to dicredit Mr. Obama, but you fail, and you know that.

Well said, Ben. I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican. I support any government who is willing to work hard and have the nation flourish. This is not the time to point fingers - this is the time to come together as a nation and rebuild. No government is perfect and governments come and go - unfortunately, it is the people who ultimately face the repurcussions of their mistakes. That is why, instead of blaming the government (s) of its omissions and its (mis)deeds, lets pick up where they left off.

I have to laugh at many of the hopeless people in here that are criticizing. You can call it what you want, but you aren’t even intelligent enough to criticize specific things. Give examples and point text out at the very least. If you think his speech was bad I dare you to write one yourself. From a professional standpoint, that was an amazing speech. It was everything a speech should be. President Obama is the best president we’ve had in years. He gives everyone around the world hope. We can finally escape from the white businessmen-type presidents that have been trying to lead this country for so long (and have failed to accomplish anything great). For the last 20 years our presidents have been mediocre and a joke. All we have been doing is staying in the same place. At least Obama plans to take us somewhere. I don’t even care if where get there or not. The fact that there is someone in the white house trying to actually do something fills me with so much hope that it could bring me to tears. I take to neither of America’s political parties, but here I must say this. Obama is making the republicans look like fools and every time you criticize him, the intellectual world is watching and laughing.

Unfortunately the facts vs the information given is not correct, very moving speech for people who want to be told how great america is, but the realistic truth is that most of what Barack suggested would never pan out. In fact his belief that he could pay back 1 trillion dollars by cutting expenses of government spending is a laugh to anyone that can add or subtract. At the very most would be 1% of that Trillion. Again we hear the words of a man who wants to exalt himself and talk about other people being the problem. Grow up Obama, stop being a spoiled brat!
at 08:47 on January 28th, 2010
America has been going through many several problems, I am talking about the economy, and I just think Obama's lying, the situation of our country is certainly worse the it has been in decades, and at this rythm, we will fall into a second great depression.
at 11:06 on January 28th, 2010
Perhaps President Obama is a bit unrealistic about when our economy will get better. But if he was honest then the republicans would lambaste him about how he "hates America." He isn't lying you idiot, he is inspiring. FDR lied and said the banks were all better and they weren't , but people once again had faith in the system and it helped America get back together again. Only difference is that FDR was a white man...and don't even pretend that people don't wish President Obama ill because he is Black.

Let's just move forward and impeach him
at 10:17 on January 28th, 2010
He use the word supermajority wtf.... He might as well said masterrace. He also accused Bush of being both fiscally responsible as well as a bad deficit spender.
