Nov 13, Colombo: The Minister of Trade, Marketing, Corporative Development and Consumer Affairs Bandula Gunawardena says that every family in the country now receiving a saving around Rs. 2,500 due to the price reduction of several essential items by the government.

Speaking at a press briefing held in Colombo this evening Minister Gunawardena said there is no need to present a budget to provide the relief to the public if there is a real need to provide relief.

"It could be done even through a gazette notification," the Minister said.

If the government increased the salaries of state workers the benefit is only for them, but the price reductions of essential items benefit all in the country including the private sector workers and the unemployed, the Minister pointed out.

The Minister stressed that the President does not need to do magic for the upcoming national polls as he is continuing to provide relief for the public.

Minister Gunawardena, a former Economics tuition master turned politician, was a member of Parliament through the United National Party. When turmoil in this party and the popularity of President Rajapaksa was observed, with no political future in the opposition, he decided to jump ship and join the Government. To do all this Gunawardena did not need any magic.

Speculation is rising about General Fonseka's candidature for the forthcoming Presidential elections. Since General Fonseka's name hit the political circles and the public, the Wizards of Oz have gone to work. The last week has seen the following:

1.  Pay hikes have been authorized to servicemen, bankers and many others.

2. 17,000 unemployed graduates were promised jobs.

3.  The price of essential items have gone down twice in a week. (At this rate, very soon, the shopkeepers will have to pay the consumers to take essential items home.)

4. The Govt media, electronic or otherwise has started attacking the UNP and the JVP, without any rhyme or reason.  Sri Lanka does not even know when the next elections will be held.

On the other hand, Petroleum and Ports are on a work to rule. The Govt. media cleverly hides this information.

Bandula Gunawardena, Minister of consumer affair who is much better known as Minister of consumer despair earlier said , he can never bring down prices of goods because Sakraya’s son too cannot . But, this same Minister has brought down the prices of goods with the speed of lightening .

For all of the above, Sri Lanka has seen the real magician and the magic word:

FONSEKA

Expect more surprises from the Government of Sri Lanka.

Yes, matters here in Sri Lanka seem a little unusual these days.  The Government does not seem to be too cocky as it was a couple of months ago. Is General Fonseka the reason.
