Aussies to publish Indian short stories by year end
Mussoorie, 20 Aug:
An Australian publisher is all set to reprint a rare book penned by writer 19th Century Author John Lang, who is buried in Mussoorie. The book, ‘Passage in the life of an Undergraduate’’ is partly based on the life of John Lang. This book was published as a serial in The Mofussilite, the newspaper that Lang published in India. ‘Mulini Press’ is prepared to reprint the book, under the John Lang Project, by the year end.
In ‘Passage in the life of an Undergraduate’, John Lang gives a detailed description of his days as undergraduate at the University of Cambridge (1838). The only known copy of the book, published anonymously, is in the British Library (London).
Besides this, the publishing house is also taking out a compilation of John Lang’s Indian short stories. The Legends of India will also get published by December 2008.
The Mulini Press has a very active printing programme of Lang’s books. One of the important books is ‘The secret police of plot & passion’. It was written by Tom Taylor and John Lang, in play format, but it never got staged in London. The novel presents Napoleon’s Head of Police as a villain. The book is considered less melodramatic.
Victor Crittenden, General Editor of the John Lang Project, says, “Lang’s short play ‘The Actor’s Triumph’ is another publication that we intend to publish this year. It is based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The play also got published in The Mofussilite and was never staged. We plan to enact the play this year.”

John Lang was Editor of the Moffusilite newspaper run from Meerut. He always fought for the rights of the common man and made a lot of enemies among the British.
Jai Prakash Uttarakhandi, journalist from Mussoorie, said on the occasion that John Lang was a socialist with a cause. He was at loggerheads with the British Empire through his writings. He further said that John Lang could have been killed by the then British Raj because he always took side of justice and truth.
Shoorvir Singh Bhandari, Jabbar Singh Verma, Deepak Rawat, Surat Singh Rawat, Sunil Silwal, Devi Godiyal and Jai Prakash Uttarkhandi also lit candles and paid their respects.[/q]
