Press Club Mussoorie Remembers John Lang

Press Club of Mussoorie paid tribute to John Lang eminent Australian philanthropist, humanist, author, lawyer and journalist on the eve of his 193rd Birth anniversary by organizing a service held in Central Methodist church Kulri Bazaar Mussoorie.The members of the club gathered at the church along with the chief guest OP Uniyal president Nagar Palika Mussoorie.Jai Prakash Uttarakhandi president press club of Mussoorie welcomed the chief guest on the occasion. The candles were lit in the memory of John Lang following which the Padree of the church Chaman Comfort read out the verses from the Holy Bible and remembered his contribution in the freedom struggle movement of 1857.
Jai Prakash Uttarakhandi the president Press Club of Mussoorie highlighting the life of John Lang said that as a barrister, journalist, writer, scholar and inveterate traveller, Lang was a friend of India. He was a gifted student of Indian languages. His travel writings about India for Charles Dickens’ journal Household Words are among the most vivid accounts of the India of his day. Lang founded a popular newspaper, The Mofussilite, which often took a critical line against the East India Company. He also represented some prominent Indians, including the Rani of Jhansi, in their legal fights against the British — which did not earn him friends in the establishment. He was even imprisoned after being convicted of defaming a Company officer in his newspaper.
Uttrakhandi also explained that the service was being held at early date due to non availability of the church on 19th Dec the actual day of his birth. He lived his later life in Mussoorie and died here.Uttarakhandi also proposed a monument be erected in his memory.OP Uniyal the chief guest on the occasion said that any written demand will be considered generously in the board meeting and Palika will support the press club in any function organised in memory of John Lang.
