Interview by phone: solarlife          (READ update PART II)

"Who is in charge of the  magic machine?

Solarlife: SL
Frank: FK  machine engineer for the LHC collider Cern swiss
Frank explain us your magic LHC machine:

Frank: FK
I am the LHC machine engineer we control two factors: energy and intensity

SL-What is the security of the LHC collider or "BigBang" machine? I know you don't like the second word, but we have to live with it, it is now popular science.

FK-You are right I prefer LHC; the emergency security is called "Beam dump", the exit tube is filled with graphite. That's like on a highway downhill, an emergency line for trucks, going up the hill, to get the truck to a stillstand. In the case of the collider it is the graphite filling that dumps the energy beam to zero. SL-did you need the beam dump for the last accident? FK-No, we just switched off the electricity. I am doing particle physics since 15 years, that's normal, we learn, like in the computer industry.

SL-Did you ever have fear for mankind with the "Bang & Blackhole" stories out there?

FK-No, I have Family, my wife is expecting our second child, no really not. But I admit for myself, we have not been prepared for such a public interest, comparable to the moon landing. Our PR did not think of all the bloggers, only mainstream press.

SL-You should have thought about crowd powered media ?

FK-Well,that's why I try this NP Interview, I lived and worked in California. I know Americans are interested in technology. SL-What will your boss say? FK-We will see. For me new, everbody can upload to this article (SL: images) ?? I work in the science team with almost 1000 people at CERN switzerland for the collider, so you will help me ?

SL-thanks for trusting Solarlife

>we have not been prepared for such a public interest, <

That's right.  Many think we can do a lot more than we actually can.  Many think we have an effect on world climate by waiting too long to change sparkplugs in the Citroen.

Fairbanks thanks for Interview Flag 'Frank and the magic machine", your opinion "Many think we have an effect on world climate by waiting too long to change sparkplugs in the Citroen." You know France, they change never the sparl plug.....

SOLARLIFE:

I like this story. Anytime one can get a live interview with someone who is this deeply involved with a leading scientific agenda such as this collider and what it represents ... it is a good story.

Aw, and they're having problems too. I'm glad to see they're trying to reach out and talk to people, great work Solar!

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) that straddles the Switzerland-France border was beset by an unfortunate equipment failure Friday, September 19—just nine short days after it first hurled particles around its 16.6 mile (27km) track. Scientists with the European Center for Nuclear Research, popularly known as CERN, acknowledged the severity of the damage will delay research at the particle accelerator for a minimum of two months.

Rob Walker thanks for Flag "Collider interview", it is just a start for a new type of interacting to action makers at the scene, a first touch, tomorrow more.

SOLARLIFE, I like this story. It's good stuff.  Many folks are worried because they don't understand the microscopic world.  Hey I have my, "qwerks" about it as well.  Help us non-psychics majors out here.

politsite, "Many folks are worried because they don't understand the microscopic world." comment to "LHC machine interview"; Tomorrow has to come popular science explainer, what is it with the machine? Now the difference: U.S. knows APPLIED SCIENCE, so they know why and who pays. Europe in this case BASIC SCIENCE, means nobody can say exactly for what is it good. Same was for the Electron beam, no concrete application, later he beamed our TV sets to create moving images point by point.

We have to discuss the fear factor with such monster machines, I agree

SOLARLIFE, I like this story. It's good stuff.

I think its absolutely wonderful to have first hand interview with a scientist working on the collider itself. I think this scientific experiment will certainly answer a lot of questions even if it does not generate the hypothesized Higgs boson. The amazing thing is that this huge experiment is shared among scientists from all over the world. i know for a fact that the ATLAS, one of the sensor instruments is majority funded and constructed in Canada.
