NP Rank:
Priests and Pedophilia...the Shame

In June 2002 the full body of Catholic bishops of the United States in their General Meeting in Dallas approved the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The Charter created a National Review Board, which was assigned responsibility to commission a descriptive study, with the full cooperation of the dioceses/eparchies, of the nature and scope of the problem of sexual abuse of minors by clergy.
Between 1950 and 2002, Catholic churches have paid out more than $2 billion in compensation to alleged victims of sexual misconduct and abuse.
In 2004, The John Jay Report revealed the number of accusations against Catholic priests in the United States to be 4,392, or 4% of all priests.
Pope Benedict XVI is in the United States this week and will address the unexcusable and unfortunate acts of sexual misconduct and abuse committed by Catholic priests upon children, and what steps the Catholic Church is taking to prevent its re-occurrence.

Rhonda J Mangus, I like this story. It's good stuff. This may sound absurd to the millenium old religion but I think one step to prevent this is to abolish the rule of abstinence and allow prelates to marry...by the way, I'm catholic. IMHO

jayr_thanks for commenting and the "GS"! Unfortunately, Pedophilia is a preference that marriage can not rehabilitate.

True...I wonder why I remarked that... maybe I just wanted to speak my mind about catholicism.

So are nuns going to be included in this? I personally have observed the damages both nuns and priests can inflict on young people that can destory their whole lives. Rhonda J Mangus, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Hi Rene - Thanks for the "GS"! Nuns do not appear to be included in the John Jay Report, as the matter was commissioned for the purpose of survey of the accusations against priests and deacons. Nevertheless, it is my understanding that Nuns have in fact been accused of sexual misconduct and abuse. I can only think that this too is being addressed, perhaps not as publicly as the priest scandal.
