Prince Harry in Lesotho

HRH PRINCES William and Harry, 26 and 24, have set off on a 1,000-mile trek on bikes across Southern Africa with a group of friends to help raise £300,000 for children's charities.  Prince Harry in particular has been interested in continuing his mother's - Princess Diana's  -  work, when he "adopted" an llittle boy suffering from AIDS over a year ago in Lesotho.

Despite admitting that the eight-day off-road trip would be an “adventure”, the princes denied that it was a rich boys’ jolly. They are part of a group of 80 riders who are raising £300,000 for children’s charities.

Harry, 24, said: “It’s not just a bimble across the countryside, that’s for sure. It’s going to be very challenging and we’re expecting to fall off many a time.” William, 26, added: “It’s a mixture of adventure and charity – the key being, the money raised goes to three brilliant charities.”

Riding Honda CRF 230cc motocross bikes, the princes will follow goat tracks from Port Edward, in KwaZulu-Natal, which they left yesterday, to Port Elizabeth. The riders aim to raise money for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, Unicef and Sentebale, a charity founded by Prince Harry that helps Aids orphans in Lesotho.

Good stuff. Sure the charities are all very worthy and it sounds like great fun but how much does it cost per head? The 80 riders raising less than 4000 per person. With the princes being involved, what is the security bill going to be? State funded to I would imagine. Perhaps the state should fund these charities and the princes should go on safari with their friends
