Prince Pedro Luis De Orleans E Braganca, fourth in line to the royal throne in Brazil and 35th in line to the throne of France, was among the 216 passengers aboard Air France Flight 447.  Air France Flight 447 went missing over international waters in the Atlantic Ocean on June 1, 2009, with 228 souls on board.

The royal family in Brazil has no political standing although they are still admired as part of that country's cultural history.  Prince Pedro Luis De Orleans E Braganca, 26, has been confirmed as a passenger on Flight 447 by other members of the Orleans e Braganca family.

A member of Brazil's non-reigning royal family was travelling on the Air France plane that went missing on Monday off Brazil's north-eastern coast, the Orleans e Braganca family confirmed in a statement.

According to the family's representatives in Sao Paulo, Prince Pedro Luis de Orleans e Braganca, 26, was among the 228 occupants of the airplane that was en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris when it disappeared from radar screens.

Pedro de Orleans e Braganca is a descendant of Peter II, the last Emperor of Brazil, who was overthrown in 1889 prior to the proclamation of the Republic.

What a terrible tragedy.  It will likely be some time before the cause of the crash is known, but there is no shortage of speculation in the media.  Here is a good survey of what is being said about the disappearance.
