UPDATED | 12:50pm EDTPrinceton University has now issued an "all clear" notice, after it was discovered that no gunman was on the campus.

The suspect "with what appeared to be a handgun" was instead found to be "a dark green plastic toy" that had been confused with a weapon.

At 11:25 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, Princeton University's Department of Public Safety issued an all clear, and has reported there was no gunman on campus.

Campus community members should resume normal activities. The investigation was conducted with Princeton Borough police assisted by Township police, and the Department of Public Safety has re-opened the campus.

At 10:36 a.m., a male with what appeared to be a handgun was reported near the vicinity of Dod Hall dormitory. There was no report of any threatening behavior or injuries. Public Safety responded immediately by issuing a campus alert instructing people to stay indoors, by patrolling and by limiting access to campus.

The first report and a second tip led Borough police to four juveniles who were taken into custody near campus. The questioning revealed that the suspected handgun was a dark green plastic toy that could be confused with an actual weapon. The toy was retrieved near the Wawa on University Place.

The juveniles are not Princeton University students.

Students had been advised to "stay indoors" at Princeton University after a gunman was reportedly spotted on the campus on Wednesday morning.

Police are investigating and the university is on lock down until further notice.

This is the message posted on Princeton's Web site:

Shortly before 11 a.m., a suspect with a handgun was reported near the Dod Hall dormitory. Princeton University's Department of Public of Safety and Princeton Borough and Township police are investigating.

Stay indoors until further instructions.

Thanks for the update, Kate. Glad to know that this was a false alarm.

Gunman on Princeton
Princeton University is alerting everyone to stay inside after reports of a gunman on the Ivy League campus.
The school's Web site says a male with what appeared to be a handgun was reported near Dod Hall dormitory around 11 a.m. (1500 GMT) Wednesday.
A dispatcher with the Princeton Borough Police Department says officers are investigating. There's no word on any injuries.
It's not clear how many students remain on campus. Commencement was Tuesday.
