Privatization reflects powerlessness of national economy : Wiranto

People`s Conscience (Hanura) Party chairman Wiranto said privatization or the selling to foreigners of a number of state-owned enterprises (BUMNs) reflected the powerlessness of the national economy.

"Privatization serves more the interest of capitalists who merely seek profits. It does not help the people`s economy," he said at discussion on leadership at the Ary Sutta Center here on Wednesday.

Wiranto said the government had not yet empowered the people`s economy maximally so that the nation could not yet be independent economically.

"Privatization is a vulgar policy which indicates the powerlessness of the national economy," he added.

So, he said, the nation`s future leaders must be able to give priority to the national economy and thus help to develop the people`s economy.

In the meantime, economic analyst Christianto Wibisono said nstional economies cannot avoid beng influenced by global economic conditions so it was difficult for Indonesia to cut its links with foreign parties.
