Imagine this… you are sitting in your church with your small children. Heads are bowed as your pastor leads prayer for the new president elect… when all of a sudden large groups of people come violently thru the doors screaming profanities, spitting on your children, while exposing them to sexual acts right before your eyes. That is exactly what happened this past weekend at Mount Hope Church in Lansing, Mich Sunday.
This vulgar protest was organized by a group that calls themselves "Bash Backers".

There is a chasm of difference between the newspaper's report of this story and the report from an anonymous eyewitness on your blog link. The bias of the blog is evident from their repeated use of the word "liberal" to apparently cover anyone they don't like. As someone else wisely pointed out, referring to these protesters as "liberals" is like referring to anyone in the KKK as "conservatives". Neither is representative of any mainstream liberal or conservative thought.
Assuming the accounts on the blog are to be believed, none of my liberal friends - gay and straight - would support such actions. There are extremists on both sides, and just as I won't paint all Christians with the brush of Fred Phelps (who yells "God Hates Fags" and "He deserved to die!" at soldier's funerals) I hope people won't try to paint all liberals as being like this group.
And to show you how extreme people can be, notice how many responses on the blog wished for violence and retribution against the protesters - not a very Christian example there.
While not condoning these actions (if the blog is accurate) I'm surprised there aren't more incidents like this. If you were denied some of your basic rights, if people acted as if your very existence threatened the well being of their children, if you faced the danger of assault because of who you love -- you might be inclined to protest too.

My understanding is that protesters were outside of Warrens church. Rick did not fund nor protest the Prop 8. He just stated that based on his view of scriptures that Marriage is between a man and a woman. He has no beef with Gays and states that Christians should be loving toward them not in your face antics.
The problem many of us Christians have is that the government has intervened in religious rites. Marriage is a religious practice. The problem for us is that two folks that love each other are limited in America because they are not married. But marriage is a religious rite. This is what happens when Government puts itself into religious issues. If the government would get out of the issue and recognize individuals own faith practices then they would accept a union between two same sex couples. In America Gay couples don't have the same rights as married couples. Even though I disagree with same sex relationships, it is not my place to forbid a loved one to have the same rights as heterosexual couples. Marriage would not have to be the remedy if Govt would get out of the religious business. Rick Warren has similar views. If folks would here him out they would understand it is about the religious rite of marriage and not the condemnation of Gay couples.
There are other groups who are militant about the issue. They do not display the mind and heart of Christ. Christ upset the religious folks of is day by eating with sinners, prostitutes and such. The religious folks, especially the Pharisees forbade close contact with such types. Jesus set an example that the kingdom of God is full of the lowest in society. He stated many times that the first (religious folks) would be last and the Last (sinners, prostitutes, and humble) would become first.
I am humiliated by what I see parading around as Christian. Rick gives 90% of his income to charity. He has a large outreach to HIV infected folks in Africa. I am not sure he is the enemy to the different in the world.. he appears to be their friend. We could all learn something from him whether we agree with his theology or not.
Just a quick rant.. I am sorry..

ojt, this story has not been confirmed in the news media. A commentary by Jason Goldtrap here, confirms this. Thank you Johnny, politisite, and Mark for your positive comments. If this nonsense would in fact turn out to be true, this group does not speak for the Gay and Lesbian community as a whole.

1) I do not have a blog associated with this
2) I make new reference to an anonymous source
3) I make no mention of wether I agree or disagree with the rights of gays to marry
4) I believe we all have the right to protest, I do not however think it acceptable to spit on children.

Gay people are faggots.
Bringing children into this? Vandalism?
Oh, so just because a few people abuse them, they think they can dress like a queer-branch of the Taliban and terrorize? They can disrupt the lives of ones in a faith that doesn't condone the marriage between two people of the same sex? Who gives a fuck. They committed a crime. They should have been at home, visiting www.meatspin.com like kind homosexuals.
Why the hateful comments toward homosexuals? Well, to be honest - the comments aren't toward all gays - just that little 'BASH me from the BACK' group. They proved nothing, the point of the whole event was just a flop. No, they pissed people off, that day.
"BASH BACKERS" - GO SUCK A PENIS.

I don't condone that type of speech to ANY person... and nor does God.
When Jesus said "Love your enemies" I'm pretty sure he meant don't treat them as i will be treated on my last day.
shame on you.
