Protesters face off with police in St Paul

We've received this voice report from NowPublic member Mikasi in St Paul, Minnesota.

"This is Mikasi here on the John Ireland over I-94 in Saint Paul, Minnesota between Kellogg and Rice St. Right now, at the junction here, there's a stand off between approximately, I'd say 150 police and right here on bicycles with horses and approximately, I can not say approximately, over 1,000 protesters. Video is, video and photos will follow. Right now, the stand off, the police have a wall. The protesters proceeded many of them. They're chanting and pretty much getting started, waiting for the other one to do something. Will call back when I have more information. "

Mikasi, thanks for getting this story out so quickly. It will now show up on the home page for four hours. If new developments justify it, I'll renew this flag for another cycle.

For more on this story see the following article from the Star Tribune.

One of the protesters' chants flaunted the police: "They're sexy, they're cute, they've got they're riot suits."

Meredith Aby, a spokesperson for the Anti-War Committee, said the expiration of the permit  was unsatisfactory because they want the delegates to know their views against the war.

"They are trying to steal our protest," Katrina Plotz said from the rally stage in front of the Captol steps. "We need to ignore the police intimidation."

Or this article from the Boston Globe.

Among the crowd were a number of participants who said they had been arrested on Monday when nearly 300 protesters were jailed after a largely peaceful march to the convention site. Small groups of protesters smashed windows, slashed tires, blocked traffic, and harassed convention delegates.

But today's rally, organized by a group called the Anti-War Committee and advertised as "No Peace for the War Makers," acquired a permit to rally on the Capitol grounds and was operating peacefully.

As of Thursday, 16 people had been charged with felonies this week. Eight of them were arrested on charges of conspiracy to riot after preconvention raids. Police disclosed this week that they had infiltrated some of the collection of groups protesting here this week and allege some members talked about kidnapping delegates.

The remaining eight charged with felonies faced offenses including damaging property, obstructing the legal process, and felony riot from their actions during the street protests on Monday, according to Jack Rhodes, a spokesman for the Ramsey County Attorney's Office.

At today's rally, several of those who said they had spent the last few days in jail complained about false charges and being denied phone calls within 24 hours, and asserted that some of their comrades were being held unlawfully until the end of the convention.

Update on head count at the protest -- apparently 600-800 people total:

Apparently the cops have no gas masks on.

FYI Amy, the police had them on and then took them off. This happened a couple of times. The cops were very well organized and showed a lot of strategy and teamwork. It was like watching a football play whenever they went into action.

Videos and photographs will follow on this. Am editing now.

Riot police have now formed a line across the Kellogg side of the bridge and about 100 protesters are sitting down in the intersection.

Looks like someday the people will need to be putting on body armor, for protection from the thug policemen.....This is the United States of America?  And people wonder why I hate America?   They should change the name of the term Election and Democracy/Convention to American Riots Convention every four years. American Protests Convention every four years. or Police State Action Convention every four years. Bully Cops Riot Convention. Beat up old people Convention. The Taser shock and Awe Convention, The Torture Convention brought to by the Republican Party.

Mikasi, I like this story. It's good stuff. While watching McCain's speach on msnbc I saw a protestor in the crowd being led off by police. He was either very brave, or very stupid to be protesting in crowd of War Vets & Cowboys....also my idea about how they should play "Barracuda" by Heart during Sara Palin's speach must have been delayed, because I heard them playing it when the balloons dropped.
