Protests at first same sex wedding in French history
When you got married, if you got married, were there protests outside your wedding? I am guessing, probably not. In fact, in the entire history of marriage by heterosexuals, there was probably not one protestor to a marriage. Well, of course there might have been jealous men or women who didn't want to see a couple get married, but nobody who wanted to ban heterosexual marriages.
Well, the first same sex marriage was performed in France and televised live. I say same sex marriage, meaning it is a not a distinct form of marriage, but it is just marriage between a couple of the same sex and not of the opposite sex.
Vincent Austin and Bruno Boileau were wed in Montpellier, in Southern France. They are a photogenic couple, and part of me wonders if that was a factor in them being the first same sex couple wed. Maybe, but anyway, it was a historic moment.
You might remember that there was grave opposition, including violence, to marriage equality in France. For one of the most secular nations on earth, there was still quite a bit of religious themed hate and loathing towards gay couples marrying in that nation. I hope this couple have armed security because I could see some poor, pathetic person who believes they are doing their god's work in utilizing violence against them.
In Russia and Georgia (the Georgia outside of Russia) Orthodox Christian believers have used violence against gay rights supporters. Breaking up protests with their fists and weapons. Ironically on the International Day Against Homophobia last week, they forced gay rights supporters to flee in buses. Because unfortunately, there is nothing like religion to rationalize hatred and loathing against despised groups be they women, gays, racial minorities, atheists or religious minorities. All these groups at one time or another have had that hatred defended by the Christian bible.
If you want to support gay rights in this nation, please think about joining with me, the Human Rights Commission, or the HRC. It's a great organization that fights anti-gay intolerance. Thanks.
