Provo Tabernacle Fire: Utah Mormon Church Burns
Firefighters have been battling a four-alarm blaze at the Provo Tabernacle, a historical LDS church in Utah. The Provo Tabernacle fire was reported at 2:43am on December 17
The fire began on the second floor, and has gutted the Provo Tabernacle: fire crews are left wondering if the church will have to be demolished once the fire is extinguished. The roof has already collapsed, and cracks are appearing in the exterior red brick walls.
It is unclear what started the fire at the Provo Tabernacle, which is located on University Avenue.
About 4:45 a.m. the tabernacle’s roof collapsed. Crews had been pulled prior to that, and no injuries were reported. By 7:45 a.m., cracks reportedly were appearing in the exterior walls of the first story of the two-story building.
"The fire at the Provo Tabernacle is tragic. The building not only serves our members and the community, but is a reminder of the pioneering spirit that built Utah," said Scott Trotter a spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, popularly known as the Mormon church, in a statement issued on Friday.
