Punjab governor shot dead in Pakistan

The governor of Pakistan's largest Punjab province was killed by a member of his security escort in the country's federal capital of Islamabad on Tuesday.According to initial reports, the assassin, who has been identified as Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, later said he was angry because Taseer had called the blasphemy law of the country as 'black law'.

ISLAMABAD: Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, belonging to the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), was gunned down here on Tuesday.

According to media, reports the incident occurred near Kohsar Market in Sector F-6/3 of Islamabad when an elite force officer, who was part of his seven-member security escort, opened fire as he was entering his bullet-proof car. He reportedly received bullets on the jaws and chest that resulted in his death. After receiving nine bullets, he was shifted to the nearby Federal Government Services Hospital (Polyclinic) where he succumbed to his injuries while his assassin, who has been identified as Mumtaz Qadri, immediately surrendered to the Islamabad police, who also rounded up  six other members of the slain governor's security escort belonging to the elite force of the Punjab Police.

The last engagement of the slain Punjab governor was reportedly his meeting with Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira.
