NP Rank:
Purse Alarms for the Vulnerable
Charnwood is in the heart of England and its biggest town is Loughborough famous for its market, Uninversity, carillon and steam railway.
It's not the kind of place that you'd expect to have to give out purse alarms to the over 60s and 'vulnerable' people but this is exactly what the local council have decided to do following an ongoing spate of purse and bag snatching in the borough and in particular Loughborough but now in the even smaller town of Barrow on Soar.
Many worry about such street crime in the big cities but that a rural council has to take these steps perhaps shows us that such crime is now a reality across Britain.
Charnwood Community Safety Partnership is to distribute alarms at Barrow upon Soar this week to prevent purse thefts amongst vulnerable people and people over 60. Purse theft is a constant threat.
The alarms will be distributed freely at The Bishop Beverage Club, 22 South Street, Barrow upon Soar at 10.00am on Thursday 5 February. Also available will be a range of crime prevention leaflets to help people avoid becoming a victim of crime and to prevent thefts from vehicles and homes.
Cllr. David Snartt the Chairperson of Charnwood Community Safety Partnership said "I was particularly pleased to see the handbag/purse alarms being fitted. After a few recent thefts involving the most vulnerable members of our community, I believe this initiative will deter thieves and give reassurance to residents when out shopping.”
