Quenching Thirst for a Good Cause!!!
I wish everyone was like this, kind-hearted & giving.
Kids hawking lemonade on a summer day is a fairly common sight, but in Tonawanda there is a lemonade stand which is a bit unusual, in part because its operator is no ordinary kid.
"A lot of people just raise money for themselves so they can buy a new bike or something, but I think helping other people is better," said 10 year Devin Mueller, who lives with her family on the corner of Deerhurst Park Boulevard and Grosvenor Road in Tonawanda.
This is the fourth year Devin has set up a lemonade stand to raise money for those less fortunate.
It all began when she was 6, and saw a newscast portraying the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
"I remember her asking us specifically, Dad, is this in America?" recalled her father, Jeff. "When we said, 'yes it is', you could see on her face she that she was wondering if this could happen in her own neighborhood, and she asked if we could build a lemonade stand to help those people."
That year Devin raised $600 for Katrina victims. The following year she raised $1,200 for St. Luke's Mission of Mercy, and last year raised $1,800 for Crossroad Springs Institute, an orphanage in Kenya for children whose parents died of AIDS. That is the same charity she is raising money for this year.
"People like the kids in Kenya need more money than we do because if we need money we can just go over in our piggy banks and get it, but they don't have anything," Devin said.
Her week long effort will conclude Friday evening at 6pm.
