It's no surprise that race has become an issue during the US presidential elections, when you have the potential for the first african american to become president. Many critics are saying it shows that underlying racism is alive and kicking in the United States, waiting only for something like this to come along.

A Florida GOP chairman is under fire today for sending out an email that complained of 'carloads of black voters coming to vote for Obama'. While he is holding a volunteer position, numerous people (including those from the Republican party) are asking him to resign.

The head of the Hillsborough GOP, David Storck, distributed an email from a Republican Party volunteer saying the voters are a threat.

That's because, as the volunteer says in the email, he sees "car loads of black Obama supporters coming from the inner city to cast their votes for Obama."

Two men were arrested and charged today for crimes relating to the Obama effigy they allegedly hung from a noose at the University of Kentucky on Wednesday.

Authorities found a life-size effigy of the Democratic presidential candidate hanging from a tree outside the school's Mines and Minerals building on Wednesday morning, police said.

Police said they arrested Joe Fischer, 22, a senior at the university, and Hunter Bush, 21, a former student at Bluegrass Community and Technical College.

Here's the earlier story from NP user ojt:

A likeness of Obama was found hanging from a tree at the University of Kentucky on Wednesday.  Police were called and the Obama effigy was immediately taken down.  The president of the University planned to personally apologize to the Obama family on behalf of this disgusting act.

Meanwhile Politisite asks what affect the Sarah Palin hanging effigy would have had if she was black instead of white:

It has been reported by the AFP and other news outlets that a resident in California is displaying a Governor Sarah Palin hanging by a Noose in from of their home.  Folks in the area, especially those supporting Democratic candidate Barack Obama, say the display is protected free speech.

Rob Walker, I like this story. It's good stuff. I have another link from my article for Now Public that shows racism on both sides.

I am worried that racism from both sides are never punished.

Rob Walker, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Notice the name of second person arrested for the effigy. What a coincidence.

I had easily dismissed the very idea that Barack Obama could even harbor racist tendecies given his diverse background and upbringing. That all came to an end when I read his memoirs and learned of his racist views from the man himself. Overlooking this ugly facet of Obama is a shame for the American voter looking for any hope of an end to the horrific tide of hatred and violence that racism has unleashed on our country for centuries - and this is merely one concerning facet of this multi-faceted man.
