Racist Images Included and Mailed in Republican Newsletter
Fried chicken, ribs, watermelon, Kool-Aid and a donkey with Senator Obama's head.
These images appear on what is identified as a food stamp. The images were included in an October newsletter mailed out to voters in California by the Chaffey Community Republican Women, Federated, under the leadership of Diane Fedele.
From the article, Inland GOP Mailing Depicts Obama's Face on Food Stamp, at Pe.com:
The latest newsletter by an Inland Republican women's group depicts Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama surrounded by a watermelon, ribs and a bucket of fried chicken, prompting outrage in political circles. The October newsletter by the Chaffey Community Republican Women, Federated says if Obama is elected his image will appear on food stamps -- instead of dollar bills like other presidents. The statement is followed by an illustration of "Obama Bucks" -- a phony $10 bill featuring Obama's face on a donkey's body, labeled "United States Food Stamps."
The GOP newsletter, which was sent to about 200 members and associates of the group by e-mail and regular mail last week, is drawing harsh criticism from members of the political group, elected leaders, party officials and others as racist.
The article further states:
Hector Barajas, the party's press secretary, said the party chairman likely will have a conversation with Fedele, and Barajas will attend the statewide California Federation of Republican Women conference this weekend in Los Angeles to handle any news media there to cover the controversy.
And reports that:
Sheila Raines, an African-American member of the club, was the first person to complain to Fedele about the newsletter. Raines, of San Bernardino, said she has worked hard to try to convince other minorities to join the Republican Party and now she feels betrayed.
"This is what keeps African-Americans from joining the Republican Party," she said. "I'm really hurt. I cried for 45 minutes."

Once again, they cry crocodile tears over the quip-flop, knowing full well they have gotten the message they wanted to send to the persons for whom it was intended.
Is anyone fired? Has anyone lost a position? Has the organization issued an apology and publicly condemned the act?
What will the local GOP do? It will "have a conversation". It will be at the upcoming convention to handle damage control.
That sends a message out loud and clear.

It is sad he can't be seen as the highly capable man he is. This is worthy of a primary school kid, not adults.

The fact that this image was created at all is wrong!!!
But also lets be honest here, the story title and the way this is being passed around the media is making an attempt at connecting the whole "Republican Party" to the actions of one lady who leads a small group of republicans which consists of about 200 people who meet once a month, is wrong as well.. Just another type of stereotyping and political cheap shot.

Good stuff, I hate political dirty tricks. It would be much better to concentrate on the issues. The Republicans have got the usa and the rest of the world into a mess, McCain is too old, Palin is too inexperienced, Obama is the man for the job.

Absolutely shocking and childish.

I'm a registered independent but I've been continuously shocked by the GOP strategy. Their party is clearly out of touch, racist and undereducated.

Karen Hatter, I like this story. It's good stuff. No matter what the source was, it was wrong to pass it on. I am really surprised that skin colour is still such a factor.

I not surprised at all. This is the Republican Party after all. After the past eight years of Republican rule full of lies and deceit, no one should be surprised! Very sad!

This is not the act of a Republican it is the act of a racist who happens to be a Republican. Just ask Sen. Byrd when he is not wearing his pointy hat.

Thanks for the flag.
It was never stated that Ms Fedele created the image nor is the size of the group she represents the focus. The internet makes all things viral in nature.
Determining the level of offensive could have been obtained from the reaction of the African American woman who voiced her displeasure with the image to Ms. Fedele.
The Republican Party in Sacramento County, California has removed and distanced themselves from images displayed at an official Republican website comparing Senator Barack Obama to Osama Bin Laden, calling for the senator to be 'waterboarded'.
For months, some of the rank and file of the Republican Party have been engaging in repulsive acts, requiring Party officials to denounce their actions.
The tone of these attacks have become increasingly racist and xenophobic, which I addressed in Playing with Fire.

This a a fringe group. They DO NOT represent the Republican party as a whole. This is exactly what Africa-Americans complain about , stereotypes. One fringe group does not represent all Republicans. The Republican Party as a whole has more African-Americans running for office then ever before. The Republican Party has more elected AA folks then at any time before. George Bush has had more People of Color in high level positions then any president in history. President Bush has given more aide to Africa then any other president in history.

The way this story is titled, it implies wrong doing by the "Party" as an official entity, when the wrong doing is at the hands of a very small group of people who do not represent the Republican Party in any official manner.
Throughout this election the rank and file of the Democratic Party have also been engaging in repulsive acts. Should we then call their actions part of the official Democratic Party stance and policy?
There are many who wear blinders and only see the wrong done by the "other side" in any given situation. I suggest everyone take a look at all angles and "stop" the rhetoric and campaigns of lies and hate instead of exasperating the situation with one oneupmanship.
An action of stereotype which in turn turns into a news story and title which stereotypes in a different way.

I don't beleive that Diane Fedele didn't know that the food depicted in the Obama Bucks is a stereotype for Blacks, she has since apologized

Surrogates for the Republican Party, people sent to Congress to represent the people, have been all over the country, voicing less than hidden racist and xenophobic statements, as they state their opinions that clearly reflect their belief "You're (they're) not like us and we don't trust you (them)!". These individuals would not constitute a fringe group.
This tone of dangerous rhetoric has been on the rise as the McCain-Palin campaign has proceeded in recent weeks.
Senator McCain stated he would back away from that tone but, picked the mantle up again, with Governor Palin leading the attacks.

An apology, though welcome by some, should not be the focus of this issue.
There is no misunderstanding an official Republican website comparing Senator Obama to Osama Bin Laden, suggesting he should be 'waterboarded'.
The question that needs to be addressed immediately is why these individuals, acting in their capacity as officials of the Republican Party, there had to have been some level of authority to allow posting at the official website, are comfortable in using this images and tactics?
at 14:21 on October 21st, 2008
I seem to remember former President Jimmy Carter referring to Obama as "This Black Boy", yet did not see a great outcry of "racist" being foisted upon him or the Democratic party that he once led.
at 15:11 on October 21st, 2008
The Democratic Party has not engaged in racist and xenophobic forms of attack, which have become the centerpiece of Republican tactics for months now.
The Republican Party has continually fanned flames of intolerance, with one Minnesota Republican stating liberals are socialists, inferring U.S. legislators need to be investigated to uncover those that are un-American, like the days of Senator McCarthy.
Sarah Palin refers to 'sections' of the United States, implying some are more American than others.
It's a descent into chaos as the McCain-Palin campaign seeks a plan to win but, instead, stirs feelings of hate, fear and distrust.

I was going to write a separate article about how tensions exacerbated but it is worth adding it as a comment to this article. I was in the Jackson Memorial Hospital Area where Mc Cain and Obama people were campaigning and asking people to vote early. The Obama Camp [African Americans] were screaming racial insuts against the White Anglo-Saxons while members of the Mc Cain camp [Anglo-Saxons] in their majority were screaming racial insults against the African Americans. I was returning to my work from lunch when both camps stopped their exchange of insults and asked me to vote for either party. My response was that I will not vote or vote Independent. Both camps stated: "At least vote for education". My response was the following: "After seeing both sides insult each other, I am going to vote Independent or not vote at all". At least the Libertarians and alternative parties are discussing issues.
I have seen in a hospital an African American Head Nurse discriminating against White Anglo-Saxons and Latins because of Race. This nurse does not give any ideological preference except for race and ethnicity. In a restaurant in Miami Florida, there was one family who stated that they will vote for Mc Cain and this is their words because they do "Not want a Black in the White House". One member of the family stated that "Obama was a hybrid who gets 42 miles to the gallon". There are even White Anglo-Saxon Democrats who are racists against African Americas and African Americans who are Republicans who hate White Anglo-Saxons that are even fueling the fire.
We are supposed to be Americans yet we are hating each other because of race, creed, colour, and politics. I know people who have left the USA for Australia out of disgust for what is happening. If I were not living in Miami Florida and if it were not for my wife and daughter [as well as other members of my family] who I love dearly, I would have left the USA in disgust. I probably would have gone to Vancouver to be with my Now Public Family in Canada. Besides my family, work, and love of Florida, what has also kept me in America has been my other family of decent people from America who work with me in Now Public.
I remember the song: "Why Can't We Live Together". I can no longer take what is happening in America

I am not excusing this disqustingly ignorant "obama bucks" ad, but to assume that this represents all republicans in some way is a mistake. Just like it would be a mistake to say that all democrats are violent and ignorant since they were throwing bleach on delegates at the GOP convention as they were trying to get into the covention.... or like how they thru a brick thru the GOP.
Was this Obama bucks a racist thing... YES.. absolutely. But at the same time I am tired of everyone screaming racists everytime there is a disagreement.
