Chris Denning - Walton Hop - Then friend of Jonathan King

With the recent allegations that Sir Jimmy Savile sexually abused vulnerable teenage girls, it reminds me of another BBC DJ  Chris Denning, the 71-year-old who was one of the first BBC Radio One DJs when it launched in 1967 and the first voice of BBC2.  Writing from his cell at the Trencin prison in Slovakia in 2010 he said his latest five-year prison conviction for producing child pornography in 2008 was "not my fault".

''I was denied the basic freedom to be legally able to have a sexual relationship with a consenting young male adult friend of 19 or 20, or to take intimate photographs of him.”

He said his various jail terms, which include terms for gross indecency in 1974 at the Old Bailey, 18 months in 1985, three years in 1988, three months in 1996, four years in a Czech prison in 1998 and five years in 2008, were all "unfair".

All offences related to having sex with young boys or producing child pornography.

Denning was part of a group of men, including former BBC radio DJ Jonathan King - jailed for seven years in 2001 after being convicted of a string of sex offences against young boys - who preyed on young boys at the Walton Hop, a '70s teenage disco. The Walton Hop was a teen disco started by Deniz Corday in 1958. It is reputed to have been the first disco in the UK. During the 1970s and 1980s, it was frequented by now-convicted child sex offender Tam Paton (manager of the Bay City Rollers).

Denning said the age of consent should be lowered, adding "the average age of consent across the 27 countries [of the EU] is 15 and several members even set the age at just 14".

He said some "elderly men" in Britain lived in fear of being exposed as paedophiles for "relationships" they had had with boys decades ago.

He said: "Britain is the only state (in the EU) with no statute of limitations regarding sexual charges at all.

"As a result, unknown numbers of elderly men in the UK still have the fear of the possibility of court action hanging over them for what may have amounted to a consensual and harmless, but illegal, fling in their teens or 20s."

A victim from 1968 said getting someone blind drunk and then raping them is not consensual sex..

A police source, with 10 years' experience helping bring paedophiles to justice, said Denning was was one of a number of men who "would never realise they had done wrong".

He said: "Denning is a man who thinks he has never done anything wrong, but the simple fact is that he has been jailed in Britain and the EU for offences against children."

A CHELMSFORD engineer who claimed that sex abuse by his uncle – veteran Radio 1 DJ Chris Denning – turned him into a paedophile has been jailed for 18 months. Paul Anthony Denning pleaded guilty to a string of sex assaults over a six-year period in the 1970s on a girl of just five when they began. But the 59-year-old claimed he was turned into a sex offender by his father’s stepbrother, Chris Denning, who is currently serving a five-year prison sentence in Slovakia for child sex offences. His counsel, Jonathan Lennon, told Chelmsford Crown Court last Thursday: “He was abused by his father’s stepbrother – Chris Denning, the first Radio 1 DJ. “It all came to light before the Jimmy Savile affair. “It had a devastating effect upon him. “He’s moved on and got on with his life but that is now shattered.” He said victims of abuse often would turn into abusers themselves. The charges involved offences in what was described by the judge as a “campaign of abuse”. The court was told that Denning, of Sawkins Avenue, Chelmsford, was 16 when he began committing the offences. Jailing him, Judge Karen Walden-Smith told the court: “Matters were complicated by the fact that at or around that time you were being abused by your own uncle and your sexual boundaries were blurred considerably.” But, as she jailed Denning, who had been a carer for his mother, 90, and his 88-year-old father and had been in a stable relationship, the judge added: “These offences are of a very grave nature committed on a young child over a number of years. “This was a gross abuse and a campaign of abuse. “Although I recognise you were the victim of abuse.” She said that Denning’s offending had had a devastating effect on his victim. “It was a persistent course of sexual offending,” she added.

Evil DJ Chris Denning 'jailed'

Published: 08th October 2008

FORMER Radio 1 DJ Chris Denning was locked up for five years today by a Slovak court for producing child porn, according to news reports.

A Slovak TV channel said Denning had been sentenced in the capital, Bratislava, without a trial after the court accepted a previous settlement between him and the prosecution.

Denning, 67, reportedly made the porn in Slovakia between 2001 and 2003.

Court officials were unavailable for comment.

The former DJ was previously serving a four-and-a-half year sentence on charges of sexually abusing underage boys in the Czech Republic.

He also has previous convictions in Britain for indecent assault on boys, gross indecency and possessing obscene material.

Ex-Radio 1 DJ jailed in Prague for child sex abuse

15 March 2000

A former Radio 1 DJ who sexually abused young boys during holiday trips to Prague was yesterday sentenced to four and a half years in jail by a Czech court.

Chris Denning, aged 58, who was in the Radio 1 line-up alongside Terry Wogan, Jimmy Saville and John Peel when it began broadcasting in 1967, was told by the judge Viktor Mach, sentencing, that he was "a social danger".

He was convicted on eight charges of sexually abusing boys under the age of 15, and of corrupting the moral education of under 18-year-olds.

Denning was arrested in Prague in November 1997 on 10 charges of sexual abuse from June of that year until his arrest. He denied the charges.

The court heard how he and co-defendants, an American, Lindsay Shannon, 45, and two Frenchmen, Jean-Pierre Roffi and Jean-Marc Smadja, also in their forties, visited Prague's bars, gambling halls and swimming pools to make contact with the boys, some as young as 13. Denning then took them back to his flat, fondled them and had sex, paying them for their services.

All played out

3 May 1999

He was one of the original line-up of Radio 1 DJs in the 60s and the first voice of BBC2. He helped to launch the careers of the Bay City Rollers and worked with the Beatles. But from his Prague prison cell that all seems a long way away. Now Chris Denning is standing trial in the Czech Republic for running a paedophile ring and having sex with children as young as 10.

On a sunny November afternoon in 1997, Denning was sitting drinking iced-tea just off Prague's main tourist artery, Wenceslas Square, with three Frenchmen. 'The police had been tailing me all day. They pounced on us in the cafe and rugby-tackled us to the ground. At the police station they forced us to stand facing a wall for hours.' At Pankrac prison, an officer took a picture of him with a compact camera - a picture which later appeared splashed across the front of the country's main tabloid, Blesk. A sexologist was then brought in to test Denning's sexuality by attaching a vacuum device, linked to a meter, to his penis. 'They gave me pictures of boys to look at. If your penis twinges they take a reading. Mine only twinged when I looked at an 18-year-old, so they said I couldn't technically be a paedophile, I was an ephebophile.' Placed in a cell with three other men, he says he was attacked and received a broken nose and bruised jaw. He spent the next four and a half months in isolation - 'for my own good, they told me.'

Ex - DJ named in police raid on child-sex ring

November 19, 1997

Child protection activists say they were saddened, but not shocked, by the announcement from Czech police that an international pedophile ring based in Prague has been smashed. Police detained five men, between the ages of 42 and 56, during the early morning sweep on Nov. 11. Three of the suspected pedophiles were French, one British and one American. One of the Frenchmen was later released due to lack of evidence, said Zdenek Janicek, director of the Prague Office of Investigation. The 56-year-old British citizen is thought to be Chris Denning, a former Radio One disc jockey, the British daily The Guardian reported Nov. 13. Janicek was not able to confirm or deny the report. Denning is believed to have been the group's ringleader. He masterminded the activities of a gang that police say lured boys as young as 7 from downtown video-game arcades to a Prague 2 apartment, using bribes of up to 1,000 Kc ($30) in cash and also drugs. The boys used the money mostly to fuel their gambling habits, Janicek said, and so far 15 boys, up to 22 years of age, have been identified. However, police suspect that more are involved. The boys were encouraged to fondle each other's genitalia and have sex with the older men. Their actions were caught on film and video, and distributed internationally via the Internet and other networks. The police raid was the result of a two-month investigation involving British, Dutch, German, French and American police. Janicek would not give details of how the gang's activities were traced because investigations are continuing and more arrests could be made. But insiders say the police were tipped off by a convicted pedophile involved with the gang. Portuguese police on Nov. 7 detained a man suspected of involvement in a pedophile ring with links to the Czech Republic. Interior Ministry spokesman Jan Subert said the Czech Republic is a magnet for pedophile operations because it is relatively cheap to both set up and employ boys. Zuzana Baudysova, director of Nadace Nase dite (Our Children Foundation) said she was shocked, but not surprised, by the results of the police raid. "At our crisis center, we receive at least one call a day reporting sexual abuse," she said. She added that she believes the situation could be improved if the Czech government ratifies Geneva Convention suggestions on the legal rights of children. The four remaining suspects are being held in custody. They should face trial in two to three months on charges of sexual abuse and endangering the morals of a minor. If convicted, they face up to eight years in prison.
