Rahm Emanuel's "Retarded" Comment: Sarah Palin Lashes Out

White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel was slammed by former VP nominee and Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin for using the word "retarded" against liberal activists protesting U.S. debt management. Palin called Rahm Emanuel "retarded" comment "sick and offensive tactic." She noted that Emanuel's "retarted" comment was as unacceptable as using the "n-word," and called for President Obama to respond.

On her Facebook fan page, Palin wrote:

Just as we’d be appalled if any public figure of Rahm’s stature ever used the “N-word” or other such inappropriate language, Rahm’s slur on all God’s children with cognitive and developmental disabilities – and the people who love them – is unacceptable, and it’s heartbreaking.

But, is Palin playing an emotional card here? Everyone knows that she is the mother of a developmentally challenged child. Her youngest son Trig has Down syndrome. Obviously, all mothers with developmentally challenged children will feel like Emanuel's comment is a personal offense against them too and will sympathize with Palin.

Although Emanuel has already apologized for his unfortunate use of the word "retarded," Palin is lobbying for Emanuel to be fired.

. I would ask the president to show decency in this process by eliminating one member of that inner circle, Mr. Rahm Emanuel, and not allow Rahm’s continued indecent tactics to cloud efforts.

While Emanuel's choice of words was deemed controversial, Sarah Palin's own linguistic prowess was questioned on numerous occasions. The most recent is Palin's use of the term "rogue" in her newly released memoir Going Rogue: An American Life. Many people felt that the word "rogue" had negative connotations meaning "destructive" and "unpredictable."

So, is Palin using Emanuel's comment to her own political advantage, or was the comment in fact offensive? What is your take?

Here come the PC police.

nanute: I remember when my wife called the local Knights of Columbus a few years back and inquired about the Christmas party that they were hosting for "special needs" kids. As you're aware, my daughter is autistic.

The Knights of Columbus guy on the other end of the phone wasn't quite sure what my wife was  referring to by "special needs" at first.  But then he finally caught on and said, "Oh! You mean the party for the retarded kids!"  My wife didn't like that too much, however I take it in stride . . .what are you gonna' do?

The political party that you blindly follow and defend no matter what kind of nonsense and BS that they expouse are the forbearers for the PC police. Indeed, the Democratic party is home to the PC police and there is no doubt about it. It is also the party that has in its ranks still to this day a bonafide former member of the KKK! Indeed for almost an entire century, the Democratic party was the only political party that the KKK belonged to.

Palin is just giving back to the Democrats what they have been dishing out for years. And I think that she has demonstrated--whether knowingly or not--the blatant hypocrisy of Democratic party members.

This is not to say that Republicans are pure as the driven snow and are not comprised of hypocrites too. Both the Dems and the Repugs have their good and bad moments. But for any thinking and intelligent American to blindly follow and defend one or the other American political parties is a tragedy in my opinion and the reason why America is now in the state that it's in.

Rory, You crack me up! I suspect you are referring to Senator Byrd? He's the only Democrat that I can think of that was a member of the KKK in the past. All the rest, had the good sense to go where they were most welcome, and became Republicans. Southern Democrats, (Dixiecrats), had a long history of KKK membership, fought vehemently against the Civil Rights Act, and with the help of Richard Nixon's southern strategy, joined the Republican Party.

I'm not a fan of PC from any perspective, and will call it out when I see it. I too have a family member that is "challenged", but I don't get all upset and express faux outrage when someone uses the "retard" label. In fact, my older brother uses the term quite frequently. Sarah Palin is making this an issue where none exists. If the comment were directed at her and her child directly, I could see the concern. I heard it said somewhere that her show on FOX, has been dubbed: "A Box of Rock on FOX." That's mean!

nanute: How can anyone crack you up? I would love someday to listen to you J and K discuss the Federalist Papers! HA! I'd keep my mouth shut throughout the entire discussion and just suck down Buds and grin . . .lol!

I do not care for Obama or, so far, any of his policies, but with people like Sarah Palin making a big issue out of something many people do on a daily basis, myself included, doesn't help bring America to the peaceful, profitable place it needs to be right now. This word has been misused in this way for decades and to single out one person that happens to have a relationship with someone she doesn't care about is suspect as to the underlying reason why she wants to publicize it.  I don't like the word either, or think that it should be used in this way; it's one of those words that keeps getting used over and over and from habit you pick it up and use it too, until eventually it really has no meaning at all.  We must get past this "look what he's doing" mentality and instead offer a resolution to the problem. A resolution that the American people can't help but accept because it's so right for everyone.  Why is the government so scared to do what is right?

It's another one of those words that's used so much in everyday language that the people using it have usually no intention of using it in a derogatory fashion aimed at people with learning difficulties, most youngsters use the term so much it has virtually no meaning any more beyond that of most of the slang they use.

But poor choice of words from a person in that position.

Someone send the guy a thesaurus, help him to avoid slipping up in future.

From somebody in a position such as Mr Emanuel enjoys, and given the issues regarding his Presidents use of the same word, Palin has a point. He should have known better. While terms such as 'retarded' and 'gay' are used by some people in everyday life, that fact does not make them any less offensive to others.

The use of the word "retarded" is offensive to some, especially those of us with children with special needs.  Individuals with disabilities didn't ask for them, their parents didn't ask for them, it was just part of a bigger plan.  However, those of you with healthy kids and a normal lifestyle should show a little appreciation and compassion for those that will never be able to walk like you, talk like you, drive a car like you, or raise a family like you.  Be thankful and focus your energy on something that matters. I thank Sarah Palin for bringing this touchy subject into the public eye.  Someone has to.  Someone mentioned that teenagers use the term loosely. That is all too true!  I am a school teacher and I will tell you that use of the word "retarded" is not acceptable in my classroom and treated as inappropriate language.  If we can't say the "n-word" or "gay" we sure as heck aren't going to allow "retarded" either. Was Emanuel's comment unprofessional?  ABSOLUTELY!  Should he be fired?  That's someone else's decision but I am no longer a supporter of him.

Sarah Palin is a nothing. Why the Obstructionist Party insists on wheeling her out every time she makes a mindless comment is beyond comprehension. It merely indicates that she is the best thing they've got, and that ain't saying much. The fact that the media is all over her every blurb gives her some sort of false credibility. Because she is nothing, she faces no liability for anything, is exempt from all responsibility, and is not accountable to anyone. Get real. She's a Facebook page, and that's all. She's a nothing and needs to go away and take care of her retarded baby. Yeah, I said it. So what? After all, it's the hypocrite Republicans that have such a problem with America being "politically correct". They should appreciate it when a Liberal speaks in their preferred dialect.

Time for Sarah Palin to go away! Funny our society. Use a word as slang, the word then becomes bad. Call a few mentally challenged people retarded, now you can’t call someone who’s acting retarded a retard. Sarah Palin is a retard! I mean that in the slang since.re·tard 1   (rĭ-tärd')    v.   re·tard·ed, re·tard·ing, re·tardsv.   tr.To cause to move or proceed slowly; delay or impede.v.   intr.To be delayed.n.

  1. A slowing down or hindering of progress; a delay.
  2. Music A slackening of tempo.
[Middle English retarden, from Old French retarder, from Latin retardāre : re-, re- + tardāre, to delay (from tardus, slow).]re·tard'ern.
