Rail Budget 2013: Railways to revise freight rate & import Trains

The government should focus more on safety and modernisation besides improving existing track and separation of passenger and freight train lines in the forthcoming Rail Budget, Assocham on Friday said.

Railways is mulling to effect a marginal hike in freight rate in the Rail Budget 2013-14 with a view to easing the additional pressure on the national transporter due to diesel price increase.

Asked whether another round of freight hike might outprice railways from the market, the sources said "all pros and cons are being taken into consideration and efforts are under way to make our rate competitive".

Assocham President Rajkumar Dhoot said that although India has one of the largest rail network, it lacks corporate culture.

"There is no escape from building a modern, scientifically designed and ICT based railway system," it said.
