Raising BC's Minimum Wage? Isn't it about time!

Recently Moira Stilwell announced her candidacy for the Liberal Leadership.  Today, she urges the Provincial Government to raise the minimum wage to $10.00 over a 2 year period, with similar increases to the training wages.
This has been a hot topic before.  In 2008, during the BC Federation of Labour Convention held in Vancouver, activists took an extended lunch break to rally behind the minimum wage increase.  They handed out mailers and asked people to send them to Premier Campbell in an effort to raise the minimum wage.  Similarly, a Liberal Finance Committee also recommended that the provincial minimum wage be increased to bring us in line with the rest of Canada.
My concern is that this move by Stilwell was only made because of the poor popularity of the BC Liberal Party, the Finance Committee's recommendation and the fact that this has been on the agenda of her future political rivals the NDP.  I hope this is not the case, but my feelings are that it is.  The Liberals have earned their reputation for not being completely upfront with their agenda's.

BC is currently one of the highest taxed provinces to live, has the highest child poverty rate and the lowest minimum wages in Canada.  I for one feel it's high-time that we get behind our young workers, increase their wages to a sustainable level so that they are able to circumvent high debt, poor health and increase their chances of success.
