Rajasthan, India: Celebrity Hot-Spot with Unsafe Water
Rajasthan, India in recent years has become a celebrity hotspot. With big names such as Julia Roberts, Madonna, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie passing through the state, Rajasthan has become a desired location for many high-end travelers. Elizabeth Hurley even had her Wedding in Rajasthan in 2007 to her billionaire husband, Arun Nayar.
It is safe to say that while enjoying their experiences in Rajasthan, there was a common theme to all of these visits – Noone drank the local water!
Everywhere in India, water is unsafe to drink, or even to bathe open wounds. However, there are certain areas of India where the problem is intensified.
In the desert region of India called Rajasthan, rural people have no choice but to drink the cloudy water running through their pipes. A video from Karauli, a region in Rajasthan, indicates that sometimes the pipes expose the water, making it susceptible to the runoff from the streets.
Bursting pipes, illegal connections, and the lack of proper taps have been serious problems, which have caused Karauli and many other surrounding areas in Rajasthan to have shortages of clean drinking water for more than 8 months.
If the problems related to water cleanliness persist, these communities, which lay beyond the sight of many high profile tourist, might be wiped out or forced to evacuate their homes.
