NP Rank:
Rambling Charlie Rangel - Make me go away
UPDATE: Added here is the link to see Charlie ramble: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/video/2010/08/10/VI2010081003552.html?wpisrc=nl_politics
I just watched Charlie Rangel going off in defense of him on the House floor. His behavior is a display of self-absorbed arrogance, an affront to Americans and his colleagues because he is using so much time and resource for his personal situation. His matter should be addressed in front of the Ethics committee.
I understand the politics that are going on – both the Democrats wanting Charlie to retire and move on and Republicans wanting to drag out the display during election season. But, this isn’t the dirty work of Republicans; this is the excessive protest of Charlie Rangel.
He admits making stupid mistakes and maybe violating some rules. He says he just wants the process to be carried out in hopes that he will be slapped the least and move on.
As I have written before, Charlie is an old-time professional politician, too old to keep serving, but that is up to the voters to decide. He has clearly done something wrong.
His display before the House illustrates the enormous inefficiency with which he communicates. He is verbose and excessive. This is not the kind of thinking needed to address modern needs of enormous scope and scale.
Sorry Charlie, time for you to go.

“Rangel: 'Somebody has to do more than wish I go away'
Charlie Rangel is still midway through his House floor defense of himself in connection with the House ethics case, but he has just said publicly what I first reported on Saturday he told a group of New York Democratic leaders - that he had signed a deal, his lawyers thought Republicans were on board, and then they pulled out.
The speech is quite something, and hard to summarize in a blog item, but it seems a bit like Rangel is taking a page out of Rep. Maxine Waters' playbook here. Waters, the California congresswoman, is also facing a House ethics trial (arguably on charges of greater severity).
But she has publicly called on House ethics probers to fully air the charges.
Rangel had not - until now.
Rangel just said the for him he would rather see a recommendation that he be expelled than that everything continue in secret, noting that President Obama often talks about "dignity" and said, "For me, that would be dignity."
"If I can't take my dignity back here, then fire your best shot at getting rid of me through expulsion," he said, adding that he apologized for taking up time.
He also acknowledged he "violated...respect for the rules....I violated that, and I'm apologizing for it....but corruption? No evidence, no suggestion that this was ever found?"”

Ethics committee should put him out.
