A group of 30 to 50 youths rampaged through the upscale Athens shopping district of Kolonaki earlier this morning, smashing shop windows belonging to banks and multi-national chains and damaging luxury cars (click here to see video taken during the attack). According to reports in the Greek media and on Twitter the incident started just before midday and those involved scattered leaflets demanding the release of anarchist prisoner, Giorgos Viogiatzi.

Riot police and other special units have been deployed however, there have been no reports of arrests so far.

Worrisome to see Greece burning it self into chaos.

There is so much anger among the youth in Greece - it's very worrying to see.

Looks like we have a brand-new religion in making - Jealousy. Whatever problem one face in life, they are all exist  because his neighbour has got a bit more money.

Scary is a very mild word to describe it.

couple of things -

1) to be honest, jealousy as a religion is not new. It was named as enemy in the Old Testament "You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour."

2) marketing, and the drive to consumption fans the flames of its own destruction. It is not lacking that causes the envy and thus the riots - it is the belief that you are not getting your due. Listen to the ads that plague us. One of the phrases you'll hear used to pitch the snake oil is "you deserve"... you deserve the vacation, the new car, the weekend at the spa.

No, if you try to light a flame under the ass of the consumerate don't be surprised that sometimes you cannot control the resulting fire.

As Capitalism spreads its dirty odour eastwards it slowly destroys cultures and communities, its the turn of the Greeks to fight.

Good luck to them.

Do we know why they are rioting and why is the prisoner who is an anarchist in prison?Presumably Greece as a Democracy has freedom of speech and the right for citizens to hold their own beliefs.

Our world is plagued by greed and we need to get the balance back it may sometimes result in people making their views known in the only way they can.
