The Rape-aXe: Dr. Sonnet Ehlers Anti-rape Female Condom
South African Dr. Sonnet Ehlers Rape-aXe Hopes To Get Anti-rape Condom Distributed During World Cup 2010
The Rape-aXe is a tampon like anti-rape condom with teeth sharp barbs, literally designed to give women in South Africa a defensive tool to deal with rapists invented by South African Dr. Sonnet Ehlers.
The Rape-aXe is condom with sharp fang like barbs that a women inserts into her vagina like a tampon. Upon an attempted vaginal rape, the Rape-aXe barbs would be triggered embedding into the rapists penis.
Once it lodges, only a doctor can remove it -- a procedure Ehlers hopes will be done with authorities on standby to make an arrest.
"It hurts, he cannot pee and walk when it's on," she said. "If he tries to remove it, it will clasp even tighter... however, it doesn't break the skin, and there's no danger of fluid exposure."
Ehlers said she sold her house and car to launch the project, and she planned to distribute 30,000 free devices under supervision during the World Cup period.
Dr. Sonnet Ehlers was inspired to create the Rape-aXe after treating rape victims while she with the South African Blood Transfusion Service.
South African has the highest rate of rape per capita in the world.
It is estimated that a woman born in South Africa has a greater chance of being raped than learning how to read. One in three of the 4,000 women questioned by the Community of Information, Empowerment and Transparency said they had been raped in the past year.
More than 25% of South African men questioned in a survey admitted to raping someone; of those, nearly half said they had raped more than one person, according to a new study conducted by the Medical Research Council (MRC).
One criticism is the fear of drawing blood especially with South Africa's high HIV rate. Ehlers says the device is designed not to draw blood and that what ever blood may spill is contained within the Rape-aXe and would not be transferred to the rape victim.
Others say that such a device will only anger the rapist and could lead to even more violence towards the victim.
The Rape-aXe website has responses to those criticisms as well
What is the possibility that the rapist would kill his victim?"
Regrettably, You are always at risk being killed by your assailant, Rape-aXe will buy you time to get away,( I know this from a patient that caught him self in his zipper. Rape-aXe will have the same effect just worse.) Luckily rapists do have brains they loose it for a few moments, when their blood rush to a certain body part, after that he will realize that is tagged and he knows he will be in double trouble should he kill you.
Asked if the Rape-aXe was a medieval device, Dr. Sonnet Ehlers says it is a "medieval device for a medieval deed."
