In the year 2005, 5,700 chidren were raped.  1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men will be sexually assualted in their lifetime.  In the year 2006 there were 272,350 victims of sexual assault in the United States.

Every 2 mintues someone in the United States is being sexually assaulted.  60% of sexaul assaults are not reported to the police due to fear.  Reporting however has increased  since 1993.

Approximately 73% of Rape victims know their assailants.  The rapist isn't a masked stranger.  38% of rapist are a friend or acquaintance.  28% are an intimate and 7% are a relative.  Only 6% of rapist will ever spend a day in jail.

Sexual violence violates a person's trust and feeling of safety. It occurs any time a person is forced, coerced, and/or manipulated into any unwanted sexual activity.

The continuum of sexual violence includes rape, incest, child sexual assault, ritual abuse, date and acquaintance rape, statutory rape, marital or partner rape, sexual exploitation, sexual contact, sexual harassment, exposure, and voyeurism.

Rape is a crime. It is motivated by the need to control, humiliate, and harm. It is not motivated by sexual desire. Rapists use sex as a weapon to dominate others.
