Tornado Devastates Reading, Kansas

A tornado hit Reading, Kansas (a small eastern town) on Saturday night around 9:15 pm, killing one man and destroying at least 20 homes. Some area residents reported hail the size of golf balls.

One man was pronounced dead after being taken to Newman Regional Hospital in Emporia, which is about 20 miles away from Reading. Two other people were brought in with injuries. No further details have been disclosed.

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management reported that at least 200 homes were damaged, including the local post office and volunteer fire department. All of the roads in the town have been closed off.

Power was restored in the town early Sunday morning and shelter has been set up at a local school.

Residents in Topeka, Kansas also reported hail the size of golf balls late Saturday night. The National Weather Service stated that a tornado also hit Topeka and a city northeast of Lake Perry, where damage to a campsite has been confirmed.
