Red Cross puts Myanmar Death Toll as high as 127,990
The Red Cross said Wednesday the death toll in Myanmar's cyclone may be between 68,833 and 127,990.This is considerably higher than the official toll of 34,273 people killed and 27,838 missing. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said it arrived at the figure by pooling and extrapolating assessments by other aid groups and organizations.
Meanwhile,Heavy rains and another powerful storm are posing a serious threat to relief operations in Myanmar's cyclone-devastated delta, where so little aid has reached that the UN warned Wednesday of a possible "second wave of deaths" among an estimated 2 million survivors. The US military's Joint Typhoon Warning Center said there is a good chance "a significant tropical cyclone" will form within a day and head across the Irrawaddy delta.

Unfortuantely there is a bit of confusing regarding this story. The operations update these numbers are quoted from was attempting to reflect the range of estimates of a number of different organizations. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is not verifying these figures. There is no Red Cross Red Crescent death toll figure. The focus of our assessments is on identifying the needs of affected communities, and then using these assessments to guide our assistance as quickly and as effectively as possible.
