Religious Survey: Pew Study Find Americans Religiously Illiterate
Atheists Outscore Religious Americans in Pew Religion Survey
According to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, Americans are lacking in overall religious knowledge. This is remarkable because, while the government is secular, the USA one of the most religious countries in the developed world (6th highest, according to Pew). The average scores: 16 correct answers out of 32. That's 50%, or an F.
Atheists and agnostics, however, maintained an average score of 20.9 in the Pew religion survey. (Pew Survey questionnaire- pdf)
In May and June 2010, 3412 Americans were polled by phone, in English and Spanish. According to Pew, Jews and Mormons were oversampled due to their relatively small numbers.
On questions about Christianity – including a battery of questions about the Bible – Mormons (7.9 out of 12 right on average) and white evangelical Protestants (7.3 correct on average) show the highest levels of knowledge. Jews and atheists/agnostics stand out for their knowledge of other world religions, including Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Judaism; out of 11 such questions on the survey, Jews answer 7.9 correctly (nearly three better than the national average) and atheists/agnostics answer 7.5 correctly (2.5 better than the national average). Atheists/agnostics and Jews also do particularly well on questions about the role of religion in public life, including a question about what the U.S. Constitution says about religion.
"People say, 'I have a personal connection with God and that's really all I need to know.' Who am I to argue?" says Pew's Alan Cooperman, a co-author of the report. But religion, as a force in history and a motivator in present times, "has consequences in the world," he adds, so an intellectual baseline, whatever your faith or lack of faith, can "shape your role as a citizen in the public square."
For example, supporters of California's Prop 8 were unable to come up with a non-religious reason for supporting a bill that outlawed gay marriage: while faith is legally protected as a private right, it often affects public life.
You can take an abbreviated online version of the religion survey.

So where can I take the full religious IQ test?

Well, the results would seem to indicate atheists familiarized themselves with the various faiths, deciding not to embrace them.
Sort of disturbing that practitioners of the faiths aren't up to speed on what they claim to believe in.

It's tacky using the words "illiterate", and "outscore" when talking about a 501(c)3 organization that takes 'opinion' polls. How does asking questions that have an answer key constitute an opinion poll?
This sounds more like the Pepsi challenge, is the plan to introduce a new religion (flavor)to the masses?
