I turned on the TV this morning partway through the 9/11 remembrance ceremonies in New York. Right now they're observing a moment of silence, the second of four, commemorating the moment that the second plane hit the south tower of the World Trade enter. The other moments of silence take place to mark the fall of the twin towers of the World Trade Center. CNN is showing footage of commemorators ringing a bell at a temporary Flight 93 memorial at Stonybrook Township, near Shanksville, PA.

Observances began at 8:46am, the moment the first jetliner hit hit the World Trade Center, beginning a day on which nearly 3000 people were killed within just a few hours. All over the world, news outlets began replaying all that 9/11 video, and it's interesting what some outlets show and what some don't, even back on the day itself: I remember that not everyone broadcast the footage of the people jumping from the towers before they collapsed.

Thank you for this post on Sept. 11 memorial services.

I'm not at all surprised that over time, there are enough people who forget that not all news outlets would carry the remembrance services, as I had alluded to in my piece.

It has been a rainy day in the city and later, the twin beams of light will be lit all through the night until tomorrow morning.

Some background on the Tribute in Light in New York City:

Those working on the project came up with the concept in the week following the attack. Architects John Bennett and Gustavo Bonevardi of PROUN Space Studio distributed their "Project for the Immediate Reconstruction of Manhattan's Skyline". Artists Julian LaVerdiere and Paul Myoda, who before September 11 were working on the 91st floor of the World Trade Center north tower on a proposed light sculpture on the giant radio antenna with Creative Time, conceived of a project called "Phantom Towers". They were commissioned by The New York Times Magazine to create an image of the project for its September 23 cover.

Richard Nash Gould, a New York architect, went to the Municipal Art Society with the concept. Gould was part of a firm whose SoHo office looked on the World Trade Center. Other projects by Gould include Howard, Darby & Levin in New York City and Polo Sport, Ralph Lauren in New York City.

On September 19, chairman Philip K. Howard wrote to Mayor Rudy Giuliani, asking him "to consider placing two large searchlights near the disaster site, projecting their light straight up into the sky."
