South African anti-apartheid activist Helen Suzman died yesterday at the age of 91. She was a committed liberal, not only at a time when it was an unfashionable political stance, but in the face of great adversity. As a Jewish woman in a parliament dominated by male Calvinist Afrikaners she dealt with harassment and invasions of privacy with unwavering dignity and determination - when accused by a minister of asking questions that embarrassed the country, she replied; "It is not my questions that embarrass South Africa; it is your answers". A brief tribute, along with poems by George Szirtses and David Broadbridge commissioned to mark her 90th birthday, can be found on the website of The Liberal magazine;
