Tribute to WTC

Today is the Eighth Anniversary of  9/11/01: the attack on the World Trade Centre in New York City.  Most of us remember exactly what we were doing on that fateful day.

The attack changed the world, with two wars still being waged in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Today 9/11 remembrance ceremonies will be held in Washington, NYC and Pennsylvania  to commemorate that fateful day.

9/11 timeline of events: On September 11, 2001, two hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, one at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and a fourth in a field in Shanksville, Pa. Almost 3,000 people died in the attacks, including 24 Canadians.

There will be four moments of silence observed at 8:46 am, 9:03 am, 9:59 am and 10:29 am ET.  The moments of silence commemorate the time the first and second planes hit the World Trade Centre and when the towers collapsed.

As has been a tradition since the first anniversary, all the names of the victims will be read.  Vice President Joe Biden will attend the ceremony.

Lest we forget.

Thousands of people are gathering to mark the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks in remembrance ceremonies planned across the United States and internationally.

On Sept. 11, 2001, two hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, one at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and a fourth in a field in Shanksville, Pa. Almost 3,000 people died in the attacks, including 24 Canadians.

Four moments of silence, at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:59 a.m. and 10:29 a.m. ET, will be held, marking the times when the first and second hijacked planes hit the WTC buildings and when the south and north towers fell.

The memorial ceremony in New York will be held at a park southeast of Ground Zero because construction on the footprint site of the World Trade Center is underway for a new tower, an underground museum and a memorial park.

The names of the victims will be read at the ceremony, which will be attended by U.S. vice-president Joe Biden.

A very sad day for thousands of families who lost their kiths and kins, dearest ones in attack which could have been prevented from happening had Bush administration not listened to neo-cons.

We can learn a lesson from this horrific incident,a man made tragedy that if we,as collective human beings, protest against all forms of injustice, voilence and wars and ostracise those responsible for a crime of such magnitude, further 9/11s may not happen.

May the soul of innocent men, women and children of any faith, any nationality, who persihed rest in peace.May God grant comfort to those who lost their sons, daugthers, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and their loved once.Amen

Thank you Albertacowpoke for this post on Sept. 11.

There will be twin beams of light lit up the skyline starting at sunset until tomorrow morning in honor  of Sept. 11 in New York City, as customary on each anniversary.

Thanks for the reminder of the twin beams.  I believe the were created by a lady in Edmonton, Alberta

Some background on the Tribute in Light:

Those working on the project came up with the concept in the week following the attack. Architects John Bennett and Gustavo Bonevardi of PROUN Space Studio distributed their "Project for the Immediate Reconstruction of Manhattan's Skyline". Artists Julian LaVerdiere and Paul Myoda, who before September 11 were working on the 91st floor of the World Trade Center north tower on a proposed light sculpture on the giant radio antenna with Creative Time, conceived of a project called "Phantom Towers". They were commissioned by The New York Times Magazine to create an image of the project for its September 23 cover.

Richard Nash Gould, a New York architect, went to the Municipal Art Society with the concept. Gould was part of a firm whose SoHo office looked on the World Trade Center. Other projects by Gould include Howard, Darby & Levin in New York City and Polo Sport, Ralph Lauren in New York City.

On September 19, chairman Philip K. Howard wrote to Mayor Rudy Giuliani, asking him "to consider placing two large searchlights near the disaster site, projecting their light straight up into the sky."

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin conveyed a message of condolences on Friday to the United States on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Speaking at a meeting of the Valdai discussion club outside Moscow, the premier said: "This is the date on which the United States and the whole world was hit by a terrible tragedy, the terrorist attack on the U.S., which resulted in great loss of life. We, as we did several years ago, mourn these victims."
