I don't fancy myself as an amateur psychologist, I also don't post on boards frequently, (perhaps you have me confused with someone else?),  and I most certainly do not look to entertain anyone. I responded to your post because you made a comment about a Family, that it appears you have no intimate knowledge of, which sounded venomous to me when I read it. If I read into it wrong, then I apologize.

I do realize that we all have problems and agree that it appears that Rich has gone over the edge....and as a long time friend of his parents, I am aware that he obsesses about imagined injustices being done to him and that he involves those around him, creating even more problems for those who know him, be it friends or family. I have watched this young man burn many bridges....some may never be repairable. I am aware of the angst that he has caused to many people.  

I originally commented on your comment about the Mills Family not having the temerity to get him help.  It is easy to say that if  he were your kid, you would find a way to get him help...well...we are not discussing a kid........he is a grown man of 39!!                                    The  Laws regarding Mental Competency are very different for children then they are for adults!

The Mental Health Laws in the State of NJ and also in Delaware are in desperate need of reform. As I said before, the family has gone to the Local Police in many different counties in both NJ and Delaware, Social Services, Crisis Intervention and other agencies too numerous to mention, over the last  year or so. They have been told time and time again that because he is a transient, he is not deemed to be in any of their jurisdictions, and  because he has not been deemed a threat to himself or others (yet, anyway) they can do nothing unless or until he presents as such (a threat). I have been at many such meetings and have walked away shaking my head in disbelief at each of them, and while his family fought ferociously to get any kind of help, I marveled at the fact that this family has had the strength to keep moving forward to do something to get the help for his safety and well being.

Several of these agencies have told the Mills Family, that the best way to go about it would be to encourage his ex-wife to go to Family Court and demand that he be picked up and incarcerated for non payment of child support and a mental evaluation ordered. It was suggested to both her and her father, on more then one occassion, in the last year but whether or not she has done this is unknown to me. As far as I know, Rich is still living on the streets or staying in homeless shelters. As she has not received child support from Rich in some two years, and it would be to her benefit because if he IS deemed mentally unfit, they were told that she could file for and would most likely be granted social security disability benefits for their child.

Keep in mind also, that there has not been any official diagnosis given for Rich of any kind, just unofficial speculation by people who were friends of Rich's at one time or another and  by his  family.

Perhaps you would be willing to offer suggestions or answers here, that would be helpful to this family. They would be welcomed and I would gladly pass them along. This is very sad for them and even sadder for the daughter who loves her dad so much, but has had no contact with him for over a year.
