Republic Day India 2011
Many people throughout India celebrate the nation's Republic Day, which is a gazetted holiday on January 26 each year. It is a day to remember when India's constitution came into force on January 26, 1950, completing the country's transition toward becoming an independent republic.
This holiday marks the date of the creation of the Constitution of India, which replaced the Government of India Act 1935 as the country's governing document, on January 26, 1950. The date was chosen to also commemorate the promulgation of the Purna Swaraj Declaration (or Declaration of the Independence of India) on January 26, 1930.
The largest event during Republic Day is a grand parade in the country's capital, New Delhi. Other highlights include the march-past of the three armed forces, folk dances by tribal folk from the various states in picturesque costumes marking the cultural unity of India. Marking the end of the festival is the streak of jet planes of the Indian Air Force, leaving a trail of colored smoke.
