The Grand old Party is back in action this week, as a reduced hurricane gustav has cleared the way for the continuation of the Republican National Convention.

Tonight current president Bush, who McCain has been reluctant to be seen standing alongside, will be giving an address by satellite. He was supposed to be there in person, but like many he decided visiting during a hurricane might not be such a good idea. After last time, who can blame him?

Tomorrow night Sarah Palin, McCain's much-scrutinized VP choice, will be speaking about his economic proposals. Mitt Romney and McCain's wife will also be speaking.

Thursday night will see McCain at the podium, along with numerous senators.

President George W. Bush, who canceled a visit to St. Paul because of Hurricane Gustav, will address the convention via satellite on Tuesday evening. About six minutes have been set aside for his remarks.

Other speakers on a day designed to emphasize McCain's record as a reformer include first lady Laura Bush; former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, one of McCain's former rivals for the nomination, and Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman, an independent and former Democrat who was that party's vice presidential nominee in 2000.

Nielsen Media Research refused to give out any stats for viewers of the RNC on Monday, as the hollywoodreporter says; mostly because there wasn't much of one:

Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday that it wouldn't provide ratings for the first day of the Republican National Convention.

It makes sense. For the most part, there wasn't any convention Monday.

Almost 300 people were arrested Monday after police fired tear gas and pepper spray at them. Numerous street medics, treating injured protesters, were also arrested.

Police arrested 284 people Monday after firing projectiles, pepper spray and tear gas to disperse a crowd demonstrating near the convention site.

Police used plastic handcuffs to detain between 20 and 30 of them a few blocks from the security perimeter around the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul.

A number of Street Medics

from Portland were arrested on Monday afternoon (Sep 1st) while tending to injured protesters. All of them belong to one affinity group which has been participating in the actions as a unit of Street Medics acting together.

About half were released by evening, while a few individuals among them are still being held. They have been singled out for "special procedures". Legal support and lawyers are trying to help out with their case as it seems to be a unique situation wherein the Street Medics might be charged with unusual (and outrageous) offenses.

Looks like the democratic mayor has his work cut out with all the arrests of protesters.

President Bush was talking about me when he talked about the angry left. I wasn't angry until I heard all the attacks on us unpatriotic Democrats.

I took care of my husband, a decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War for 10 years before his death from his combat wounds. How dare Bush and McCain et al attack my patriotism?

My husband paid the ultimate price to serve his country, as are so many of our young men and women right now in the Middle East. I served my time and proved that I am a true American when I cared for him as his health failed.

I hate seeing the divisiveness in this country today, and the GOP convention is roiling with anger and hatred. I won't watch another second of it on TV.

Angry left indeed. We are all Americans, it's time for the angry right to remember that.

I do not think he can save this fiasco any longer. Especially not Bush.

Well it is a nice try of McCain-Palin but it want work. I like it when George Bush speaks. Always funny and stupid. Great, this will help the USA by chosing the only right next president of the USA: Barack Obama.

Can't wait what Bush has to say. By the way, i liked him when he played Beach Volleybal at the Olympics.
