Republican Indiana Rep. Richard Mourdock, who is running for a seat in the U.S. Senate, believes that rape is something intended and planned by the god that he believes in. He literally said it. He stated in a debate with Democratic candidate Joe Donnelly that, "I think that even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen."

To tell you the truth, I am not that surprised. I have heard too many statements from the Republican religious right-wing that display an utter contempt for our Enlightenment based heritiage as a secular republic. They have said that America belongs to their god. They believe that the head of state of the U.S. government is not really the president, but their deity. So to them, when someone is wronged and harmed, be it a rape or a murder or a genocide, it is all part of the plan of their god.

Why is a rape, murder or genocide wrong after all, if their god says it is fine and something he intended to happen? I talked to a religious right-wing talk show host who stated when I asked him if this god says murder is right, is it right. He without hestitation stated that it would be moral. So, their morality is just the product of the dictates of this unseen and invisible god somewhere in the sky. It isn't built on reason or compassion or anything of substance. It is meaningless, just like the thoughts of one Rep. Mourdock.
