The Republican propaganda has had much effect in reaching people both inside America and without. Coming from Russian immigrants who settled in Northern Virginia, I saw the effects of this propaganda on both demographics. I am writing this to correct two commonly-held errors that resulted from this propaganda. One is that of comparing Democrats to the Communist Party of Soviet Union (CPSU). The other is that of equating Republican Party with America and giving it credit for America and its achievements.

On the first I ask this: What labor camps have Democrats built? How many millions have they imprisoned and murdered for their political convictions? What countries have Democrats invaded and made their satellites by force? All evidence points instead to CPSU-type activity by Bush Republicans, who have used fraud and corruption to get into the White House; murdered over a million civilians in Iraq; instituted torture, even of teenagers; lied to Americans and to the rest of the world; and have consistently used bullying and deception to push their party line against public opinion while claiming that they are America and that the rest of America is not America, when they in fact not only not America but a minority of America and not its better part either.

Another error is that of equating Republicans with America and giving Republicans the credit for all of America's accomplishments. It is largely for the sake of transparency that this claim put to rest. Here are the facts:

- The Democratic administrations of Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt won, respectively, the First and the Second World War;
- The Democrats form the vast bulk of America's scientists and innovators, with over 90% of its Nobel Prize winners being Democrats and only 3% of academics being Republicans;
- Of America's 10 foremost educational institutions, 9 are in solidly Democratic states and are centers of Democratic Party's activities;
- The computer industry, which has been the main engine of prosperity of 1980s and 1990s, is largely Democratic. The personal computer was invented by a hippie. The computer industry is located in solidly Democratic San Francisco Bay Area and Washington State, as well as in the Democratic-voting Northern Virginia. The Democrats make up the bulk of both its management and its rank-and-file.
- The Clinton Administration gave America its greatest peacetime economic expansion (the greatest wartime one having been under Franklin Delano Roosevelt). Its policies created 23 million jobs, the first balanced budget in three decades, international peace and prosperity, and a revamping of the government to become efficient and user friendly (Reagan only whined about the government while being its head). It also brought about a significant reduction in violent crime - which grew under Reagan and peaked under Bush Sr. Meanwhile the Bush Jr. administration added $5 trillion to the debt, with no jobs created, amid collapsing family incomes, and at the end the worst economic crisis America has had since the Great Depression.
- Democrats form the bulk of America's teachers and journalists, whose contributions are not easily measured monetarily but are of greater significance than those of many far higher-paid professionals.
- Democrats have fought for civil rights, human rights, and women's rights, while Republicans have done all they could to sabotage all of the above.
- Democrats have fought to bring to public attention the facts about global warming. Republicans have done nothing but aggressively deny reality - on this, as much as on federal debt.

The people who blame all things on "liberal government" or "big government" or compare American government to the Soviet Union know nothing of what they're talking about. Without the government Interstate, the anti-government truckers would not have the roads on which to deliver the farming goods, created by government-subsidized anti-government farmers, to the big liberal cities that are the market for their products. Without the government academia, the academic research that has been necessary for the hardware and technology that are at the core of business production would not have taken place. Without the government Internet, the computerization and Internet commerce that was the source of 1990s growth would not have been possible. Whining about taxes was a big trend under the Clinton administration. Being in the high-income bracket, I had a lot of taxes to whine about. I did not whine about my taxes, because I knew where the money was going and saw it as my civic duty to pay it. Under Bush I would have had less taxes to whine about; but there was a problem. Like many others, under Bush, I no longer was in the high-income bracket - or, for some of that time, in any bracket at all.

But beyond personal experience, let us look at the big issues. Who has given America a $10 trillion debt? Who has aggressively for three decades denied global warming? Who has done this to the country they claim to love, and to the children and grandchildren for whose sake they claim to practice "family values?" It wasn't the Democrats. It is the Republicans who have done this to America and to their children's and grandchildren's future.

So to put it shortly: Democrats are not Communists; Republicans are not America, nor do they deserve credit for America. Case closed.

"- Democrats have fought for civil rights, human rights, and women's rights, while Republicans have done all they could to sabotage all of the above."

I don't know when someone got off the bus, or at which stop, but they were riding on the wrong route for certain sure..

I am glad to hear the nasty old religious, conservative, Republicans had nothing to do with the abolition of slavery in this country. Yes, thank you for reminding me of that fact.

Thanks as well for negating the republican votes in Congress that helped pass Civil Rights legislation in the 1960's.  Yes, thank you.

"- The Democratic administrations of Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt won, respectively, the First and the Second World War;"

I'm sure the French and British and Canadians and Australians will be willing to agree, that yes, in WWI, they did almost nothing, while those heroic Democrats did all the heavy lifting, took the casualties, and went home victorious.  Not unlikely that they will soon erect statues of Wilson in parks and plazas everywhere, in appreciation.

Certainly, the 25 million Russians, or the 30 million Chines that died in WWII had no effect on the outcome, nor did the deaths of hundreds of thousands of our allies. The fact the Yugoslavia had more combat casualties than did the magnificent Democrats, is perhaps of no importance to those that write the history of the war, but it is a fact nonetheless.

"- Democrats have fought to bring to public attention the facts about global warming. Republicans have done nothing but aggressively deny reality - on this, as much as on federal debt."

In light of recent revelations about the "Global Warming" scam/con job, I don't think that much needs to be said about aggressively denying reality.

Nor does much need to be said about the current Top Democrat and Federal Debt. Except to ask, "That is a joke, isn't it?"

"- Democrats form the bulk of America's teachers and journalists, whose contributions are not easily measured monetarily but are of greater significance than those of many far higher-paid professionals."

To go back over the errors noted, would be redundant. To ascribe those errors to the teachers and journalist that have perpetuated those errors, would be unkind, but justified.

I will agree that they "are of greater significance than those of many far higher-paid professionals."  In the process, they have filled the minds of many with egregious error, perpetuated stereotypes, and created division because of their ideology and propensity to bend facts to match their perception of reality.

"The Republican propaganda has had much effect in reaching people both inside America and without."

Although I agree the Republican's "War on Terror" has had far reaching effects in defense of many different nation's citizen safety and security, the "propaganda" mentioned appears more like the current Democrat's.... "CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN" philosophy, with even more wider-reaching negative effects.

Down with the intellectuals. Oopps, there goes all of the "higher education" in America. But then again a fresh start might not be all that bad. We then might have a chance at the truth or at the least, hear more than one side of an issue.

MLK was a Republican as was/ is most of his family.  3 Amendments to the constitution to protect the rights of Black Americans were introduced by the GOP.  Thus restoring AA to full citizen status.  A little history will show that many KKK members were democrats.  Democrats have lied to minorities for years, telling them their lives would be better under their rule.  Anyone who looks at poverty trends throughout the years would see that the opposite is the case.

President Obama has instituted socialist Czars and working toward centralized government rule.  Something the constitution forbids.  I am not sure I have heard anyone say he was instituting former soviet style government.

"A little history will show that many KKK members were democrats."

Many? JEEZ! During the Klan's hay day (they had two hay day epochs) the only Republicans in proximity would be hanging from a tree!  Democratic Senator Robert Byrd can tell you about that. So can Woodrow Wilson. Both of them had intimate knowledge of the Klan . . . .

It never has been quite as simple as Democrats good, Republicans bad or vice versa.

The Rise and fall of Jim Crow states the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was formed by former Confederate soldiers in Tennessee in 1865, with Tennessee later hosting a KKK convention in 1867 which drew delegates from the former Confederate states.

The Compromise of 1877, which occurred after the period known as Reconstruction, directly after the so called Civil War from 1865 to 1877, with some scholars extending Reconstruction through 1880, was a deal that was brokered by Democrats and Republicans, orchestrated to remove the Republican controlled government's federal troops, who aided enforcing laws and protecting the newly freed, formerly enslaved people, in exchange for naming Republican Rutherford B. Hayes the U.S. president, setting the stage for the nearly one hundred years of discriminatory laws and customs imposed upon African Americans.

An excerpt from the Compromise of 1877 link above::

The Compromise of 1877 decided the outcome of the controversial presidential election of 1876 through a series of back-room discussions between Congressmen and private interest groups, and resulted in the retreat of the federal government from enforcing the 14th and 15th amendments for blacks.

The Congress had passed the Civil Rights Act in 1875, making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, but there was a national backlash against civil rights that led to the Supreme Court's nullification of the Civil Rights Act in 1883.

North and south began a period of reconciliation, characterized by acquiescence on the part of Northern liberals and government officials to the desires of the white south to institutionalize its discriminatory and racist beliefs.

Many Southern blacks had become politically active after the Civil War, but after 1877, most lost the right to vote or to hold government positions. In 1878, the Congress forbade the use of the Army to protect black voters from the intimidation and physical violence with which they were regularly threatened at the polls.

By 1894, Congress ceased appropriations for federal marshals to protect black voters; meaning blacks were vulnerable to intimidation and threats of ex-confederates. In 1901, the last black representative lost his seat in Congress. It would be 30 years before a black person could gain a seat in the House or Senate.

The 109th United States Congress, in 2005, passed Senate Resolution 39, apologizing for its inaction in the past, acknowledging the U.S. Senate's failure to address the crime of lynching on the occasions legislation was introduced in the U.S. Senate to address it.

Among those in opposition to the resolution at its signing in 2005, 1 Democrat and 19 Republicans, including the two Republican Senators from the state of Mississippi, Thad Cochran and Trent Lott, that state having the horrid, historic distinction of being the U.S. state with the most confirmed lynchings.

It should also be interesting and important to note that although humanitarian in origin and purpose, Reconstrucion under the Fourteenth Amendment has been practically appropriated by the corporations.  It was aimed at restraining and checking the powers of wealth and privilege. It was to be a charter of liberty for human rights against property rights. Instead, it operates today to protect the rights of property to the detriment of the rights of the people it was intended to protect. It has become the Magna Charta of accumulated and organized corporate capital.

Makes one wonder if this was the underlying intent from it's inception, all along.

1. The people who have aggressively denied global warming for the last 30 years before it became the great crisis that it is now will go into history as the greatest scoundrels in the history of the world. Scientists knew, then some politicians tried to tell the truth but were shouted down by those who either wanted an Armageddon or the supremacy of Texas Oil. Some of the constituency that has denied global warming want the world to end before the children being born now have learned how to read. Then they claim to have responsibility and family values. This shows just how far from sanity such people have gone.

2. Since the Republicans like to claim credit for America's military accomplishments, and many use the victory in WWII to present America as having saved the world, the French as being sissies, and World War II generation as having the right values, it is rightful to remind people that the Americans who fought in World War II were doing so under a Democratic government.

3. The South has been the most Republican-voting area of America in recent elections. There were at one point Southern people who voted for Democrats because they identified Republicans with Abraham Lincoln. When Democrats became the party of civil rights and remained the party of civil rights, these people switched their allegiance to the Republican Party, with which they have since then remained.

4. The skinhead, neo-Nazi and Christian Identity types vote Republican or for splinter parties such as the Christian Party. The modern-day Republicans are nothing like Lincoln or Lincoln voters, and most people who voted for Lincoln would vote Democratic in present days.

5. Vietnam entanglement began under Eisenhower and ended under Ford. It was the Right that claimed those who opposed it to be traitors.

6. Before the last election, Republican operatives were calling voters to tell them that Obama was a Muslim terrorist. Same people also like to compare him to Hitler. In fact, if there was a government in American history that was expressedly anti-Constitutional, dictatorial or illegal, it was that of Bush Jr., which was put into place through corrupt dealings in Florida and then instituted torture, and lied to get America into war.

7. Clinton was the only president in recent history to achieve a balanced budget, and doing so cost his party's control of Congress. Bush then destroyed this accomplishment and added another $5 trillion in debt, with Republican Congress and nobody to blame but himself.

8. My piece is meant to address two wrongful items of Republican propaganda: That Republicans are to be credited for America's achievements, and that Democrats are like CPSU. As I've shown, more of America's achievements are due to Democrats. And as we've seen from recent Republican governments, it's Republicans that are more like CPSU.

Well, at least half of that is about half right, give you that.

HUGH: After reading this story for a second time and reading all the comments, I'm compelled to recommend it. The story, in and of itself, is quite telling and informative. That doesn't necessarily mean that I agree with its content, however I often recommend stories that I don't agree with. I do admit to getting a few chuckles from some of the comments . . . .
