As of October 2008, Prince William, second in line to the British throne, will become a serach-and-rescue pilot with the Royal Air Force.  Prince William will transfer from the army to the air force in order to take on the new role.

The Prince learned to fly earlier in the year as part of his tour with the air force.  He has also done temporary stints with the Royal Navy.  He will take on the rank of flying officer and will pilot one of the six Sea King helicopters in the RAF.

Clarence House said the second in line to the throne would transfer from the army to the air force, where he will hold the rank of flying officer. If he completes his course, he will fly Sea King helicopters with one of the RAF's six search-and-rescue teams. "The time I spent with the RAF earlier this year made me realize how much I love flying," said Willia , who was criticized for landing an air force helicopter on his girlfriend Kate Middleton's lawn during his training, and for using another chopper to fly to a bachelor party on the Isle of Wight. "Joining search and rescue is a perfect opportunity for me to serve in the forces operationally, while contributing to a vital part of the country's emergency services," he said.

Prince William's army regiment was recently deployed to Afghanistan, but he was not permitted to go after his brother, Harry, had to be called home early last year when his service in the area was revealed by British media.
