A walker who ended up lost in the Scottish Highlands was saved because rescue workers saw the camera flash from his cell phone.

Stornoway Coastguard were able to talk to the man on his phone but could not see him, so from the helicopter above they got him to flash his phone's camera and the rescue crew used infrared to locate him.

A Stornoway Coastguard spokeswoman said: "The guy was lucky and managed to get the phone to flash a couple of times on its camera facility. It was quite ingenious."

The unnamed man got lost with this dog on Friday night on Barvas Moor, on the Isle of Lewis. Both the man and his dog did not need medical treatment.
