Thankfully its miles away from where I live, the government have made statements that their aim is stop the loss of life by evacuating the area around the Mayon volcano. There has in fact been warning that Mayon has been ready to erupt for some time now. I just hope that will not be a very major eruption and that all the people are in fact evacuated in the danger zone and the danger zone is a wise one.

Philippines authorities Tuesday started evacuating about 50,000 people living around the island nation's most active volcano after it oozed fiery lava and belched clouds of ash.

A large-scale eruption was forecast as imminent.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level up a notch on Monday night to level 3. Scientist Alex Baloloy told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) that under level 3, "a full-blown eruption is expected to take place within weeks to days."

He said seismic instruments detected 83 volcanic quakes, a majority of which were tremors associated with rockfalls.

People in Albay province, about 466 kilometers (290 miles) south of the capital, Manila, flocked to town centers to catch a glimpse of glowing lava cascading down the slopes of Mayon. The volcanic mountain soars 2,464 meters (8,077 feet) into the sky and has erupted 49 times since the first documented eruption in 1616.

LEGAZPI CITY , Philippines – Disaster mitigation officials here have started evacuating close to 10,000 families residing within a radius of six to eight kilometers from the crater of Mayon Volcano after it spewed lava which flowed half a kilometer downslope. Nearly 50,000 people live within eight kilometers of the volcano and Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said he is targeting zero casualties. Salceda said he decided to cancel a trip to Copenhagen, where he was to attend a UN climate conference to discuss his province’s experience with typhoons and natural disasters. He said he would appeal for foreign aid to deal with the expected influx of displaced villagers to evacuation centers. “It’s 10 days before Christmas. Most likely people will be in evacuation centers, and if Mayon’s activity won’t ease we will not allow them to return to their homes,” said provincial emergency management official Jake

The volcanos recorded history..

Mayon has had forty-nine eruptions in recorded history. The first recorded major eruption was in 1616, the last and weakest eruption ceased on October 1, 2006, [3] although a lahar followed on November 30, 2006. A further summit eruption occurred on August 10, 2008. [4]

Mayon Volcano on September 23, 1984

The most destructive eruption of Mayon occurred on February 1, 1814. Lava flowed but not as much compared to the 1766 eruption. Instead, the volcano was belching dark ash and eventually bombarding the town with tephra that buried the town of Cagsawa—only the bell tower of the town's church remained above the new surface. Trees were burned; rivers were certainly damaged. Proximate areas were also devastated by the eruption with ash accumulating to 9 m (30 ft) in depth. 2,200 Albay locals perished in what is considered to be the most lethal eruption in Mayon's histor

Earlier report with some really good graphics.

Mayon, the Philippines' most active volcano erupted earlier today. More than 20,000 nearby residents were evacuated from Mayon's immediate area and sent to temporary housing. Mayon has erupted more than fifty times during the last few hundred years, most recently in 2006.

A state of calamity was declared in the province and officials closed off areas near the mountain..

(Update 12:54 p.m.) Mayon Volcano shot seven plumes of dirty white smoke as of Friday noon, with one reaching almost 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) into the clear blue sky, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

LEGAZPI City: A major eruption of a volatile Philippine volcano could be just weeks away, scientists warned Thursday, as thousands of residents faced the prospect of four months in temporary shelters.

Mayon volcano's crater appear just like a giant torch towering in Legazpi City, Albay

“We saw the formation of two lava domes at the crater of Mayon during an aerial survey yesterday,” government volcanologist July Sabit told Agence France-Presse.

“This indicates pressure is building up from the inside and the rising magma had accumulated at the mouth to form the domes,” he said.

“If this continues, it is likely that part of the domes will collapse, causing pyroclastic flows or a major eruption,” he added.

This could also mean that tens of thousands of villagers evacuated from around the picturesque but deadly Mayon could spend up to four months crammed in temporary shelters, officials said.
