Restrictions on fishing lifted

The government has lifted fishing restrictions imposed on fishermen in the north.

"The restrictions placed on fishermen venturing out to sea from areas that fell within the northern coast between Mannar and Mullaitivu have been lifted", the Information Department said.

Convener of Jathika Deewara Sahayogitha Viyaparaya (National Fishermen's Solidarity) said that they welcomed the decision by the government provided they are given all the facilities.

He said that these fishermen had underwent hardships for decades as a result of these restrictions, and their normal life could be restored to the previous standard if required facilities are met.

"The threat posed by foreign vessels fishing in the Sri Lankan waters should come to an end", he said.

Referring to boats, fishing nets, and storage facilities, Herman Kumara said that essentially fishermen should be given a subsidy to the ever increasing price of fuel.

Restoring the normality to the dily life of the civilians who was affected by this war.
